Hey,

I've got Vegas 6 and the dvx100b. I'm planning on shooting both short and full length features. What are the minimum specs that I should be considering for an editing system. Do I need a 200Gig 7200rpm Hard Drive? What about video card, firewire, memory, CPU, and monitor? Any help is greatly appreciated. I want a computer that will be compatible and work well with vegas.
 
Any pc from about 4yrs ago or new should run vegas fine. How fast you want it to render and move files etc is up to you. My setup is as follows.

Dual 17" monitor setup w ntsc tv output
amd 3200+ processor
2gb ddr 3300 ram
2 internal harddrives, 1x 150gb for windows files, 1x 200gb for video
1 external harddrive, 1x 250gb

For now thats sufficent for my needs, though i'll most likely be picking up atleast 1 more external 250gb hd at some point.
 
You definitely need a *LOT* more hard drive space than you'll ever imagine. I had a 200GB drive and though I was safe for many years ahead, but hey, it got filled up after two months. Now I have 350gigs, and I have to delete files all the time in order to free up space for more video. Video is space consuming, man!

And also, for usual editing with Vegas, the video card makes no sense. At least, I could edit just as well on a GeForce2 with 64mb, as with a GeForce6600 with 256.

RAM also makes sense, get at least 1500mb, and you're good to go. :)
 
Sweet thanks for the tips. Also, in regard to the specs of my PC. My PC right now won't cut it. I've only got 40gig HD, 1Ghz CPU, and 256RAM.
 
Yeah mann..you wannna reallly upgrade that then if your serious about editing.

suggestions get at least a 250 gig HD...or 300.

atleast 2.5ghz but 3.5ghz is awesome if you wanna render stuff fast. Some machines also have Multicore processing which speeds up rendertimes.

for RAM, id say atleast 512...maybe later on down the road get 1GB
 
I still use my 2500xp barton running at 3200 speeds and it still runs solid..But to note I have a 10000rpm SATA raptor drive as my system drive so it really flys. Plus 1gb of ram and 2 IDE 80gigs and 1 300GB SATA.
