Vegas pan/crop still picture

Hi all,

I took some still photographs from a helicopter today at 5 megapixels. I've been zooming way in on them and panning around, and they look beautiful, almost like I used a big tripod from 2000' !

The problem is when I zoom back out to see the whole picture, Vegas doesn't seem to be doing any sort of intelligent scaling of the image...it looks very very bad, very noisy, not at all like a scaling operation in photoshop, which looks great.

Is there a way I can apply an antialias or some such filter to the clip to get it to scale a bit better?

Thanks!

If zooming in scales well, but zooming out is bad, could you build a zoom-in clip and then reverse it to get the same effect as a zoom-out? You might have better control of composition that way also.

Re: Vegas pan/crop still picture

Hi Screech,

Sorry, after re-reading my post I can see how you misunderstood my problem. Let me try again. :)

The images are 5 megapixels...very large. If I show them at 1:1 size, then I am only ever seeing 720x480 of the image at one time and it looks beautiful, because it's a 1:1 pixel mapping. So it's not the act of zooming in, it's BEING zoomed in that looks good.

Anytime the image is squeezed to fit entirely in 720x480, Vegas appears to be doing an unintelligent job of deciding which pixel to render. If you imagine all those pixels being squeezed into 720x480, and imagine looking under a single on-screen pixel, you'd see a bunch of pixels from the original image. What Vegas appears to be doing is simply drawing the last pixel in that cluster rather than averaging the colors to determine the pixel color.

It's real easy to see what I mean...just drop a BIG picture (mine are 2592 x 1944) into vegas and see what it looks like. Notice that the closer to 1:1 scaling you get, the better the image looks.

I hope this makes more sense. It's a weird problem.

Thanks for the help!

-John
