Vegas or Premiere??

I anticipate tons of fan replys saying one is better than the other, but from a serious perspective can any one comment on whether or not transitioning from Vegas pro 9 to Premiere CS5 would be worth it in general, but more importantly worth it based on my PC specs (and planned upgrades), as well as my work-flow.

I am worried that the change would take more time than I have to adapt to and with three projects sitting in the wings, waiting on post production work I don't know if I can afford to be learning something new, although all but one of the three are personal projects from two vacations we took this year that I have yet to string together, and I could play with.....

My delima is that I have been using Vegas since version 8, I suspect Version 10 Pro is forthcoming as well, but am getting ready to move from Vista to Windows 7 and reinstall all my programs from scratch and am wondering if it would be worth the change. My wife has CS5 Master edition which comes with premiere which she will not use, I like to keep my machines clean so wouldn't install unless I used it.....

I shoot both HD and SD using a Panasonic Gs500, MiniDV camera and my recently acquired LUmix GH1(3) for HD content. I never mix the two formats, and shoot mostly travel documentaries, home movies and the occasional political campaign commercials for web and TV, no feature films (yet).

My current system is comprised of:

Intell Q9700 Quad core 3.16Ghz CPU
8 GB Ram
Geforce 9800 GX2 Graphics card
2x Seagate 500GB Harddrives
WIndows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

My upgrade will include replacing:
Hard Drives - WD Black Series 500 GB HDD (x3)
Geforce 480 GTX
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

It's really not an either-or proposition. They'll live quite happily together on the same machine. If you already have them both, use them both and figure out which one you naturally gravitate toward more.

My understanding is that with your system you may be able to take advantage of the Mercury/Cuda options in CS5 which would let you edit multiple HD layers in real time, which I do not think Vegas can do. This could be a huge time saver and big advantage. However, your NVIDIA card has not been verified by Adobe so you'll have to use a workaround. I posted info about this here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=218147

This sounds really cool. Actually both my cards ( the 9800 GX 2 I currently have and the 480 CTX I am getting ) were listed in the article but the 9800GX2 being a dual core or two GPU card it indicated only one of the two would be used. The 480 is their current top end card.... will have to do some more research

very cool, thanks.... I need to download a tutorial and see Premiere in action as to whether it would be a major stretch for me to use it. Once I get Windows 7 installed and the system back up to were it is now, I may try running them both for a while. That way I can use Vegas to finish the big project and then play around on my personal stuff and learn Premiere....

I just wish someone could invent a way to shorten the time it takes to edit stuff.... after 5 years at it, I have gone from about an hour of time to edit 2-3 minutes worth of footage to still about 30 minutes to do the same..... maybe I am just slow. At least finally I know my hardware isn't my limitation.

I bought Elements and found it to be a ridiculous resource hog so I tried Vegas and it's worked wonderfully (I've updgraded my machine since then, tho). Vegas is ugly and in dire need of a facelift but it can ultimately do anything and it just 'works'. It's the ugly duckling compared to the prettiness of CS5 (and most other NLE's) but it's beautiful on the inside!

I've recently purchased an Adobe bundle with Premiere CS5 in it and I just can't bring myself to learn a new UI, so I'm marking this thread to see what people have to say.
