Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Edition & MXF?

I am a Final Cut Pro/Mac user. But I shot a project that will be edited by a client using Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Edition. All footage was shot in DVCProHD 720p 24 on my HPX170. The final product will be viewed on an HD television in a museum environment. I will be looking at his edit set up and software on Monday, but I have no knowledge of Vegas at all. So any help is much appreciated.

A few questions here:

1. Is it possible for my client to edit MXF files or DVCProHD? It appears from other comments in this forum that this is a challenge unless one uses Raylight. Yes? Is that the best solution? Also will it work with this low end version of Vegas? Any other options?

2. Also, it seems that this version of Vegas has limited output options for HD in 24p. Basically, Blu-Ray output options at 1080. So the main question here is - how can he maintain DVCProHD quality through to HD output?

BTW - I don't think that upgrading to Vegas Pro is an option, but I'll check with him and see. Would that solve the production path issues?

Thanks. pw

You can edit it in VMS if you have the Raylight plugin.

If it's 24pN, you can edit it as 24p, but you have to create the project template manually (1280x720, 23.976, progressive).

As for output . . . well, like all the "light" versions of NLEs, 24p isn't really in the schema, though VMS is one of the few (if not the only one) which will even let you set up a 24p timeline. You may be able to output as 720p/24p using the Raylight codec (identical to DVCPRO HD), though you'll have to set that up manually, too. But I don't know 100% if you can do that.

Yes, the full version of Vegas (with Raylight) would give you all the options.
