Vegas jittery preview

Hello,

Thanks to many in this forum most of my jittery preview is gone with the update of both my video driver (made possible playing uncompressed AVIs in media player happen without skipping) and updating my chipset drivers on my Athlon 4200 dual core ASUS A8N-SLI board with 1 gig ram and Nvidia Geforce 6600 video card. My hard drive is a 300 gig seagate 7200 SATA-1 drive with 16 mg cache.

My jitters only occur occasionaly especially when starting and stopping, usually about 5-10 seconds into playing. It's like the hard drive is playing catch up and the cache gets empty before it catches up. Just playing an avi in the timeline straight through usually is free from jitter.

One thing that came to mind was that I've taken the 300 gig and partioned it into a 20 gig for operating system and a 280 gig for data. Does this present a problem? Am I accessing it twice as much this way for some reason???

The drive light is pegged on the whole time it is playing back in the preview screen. It is optimized for speed in WINXP SP 2. When going to device manager and running a speed test it says:
Theoretical limit: 150 million bytes/sec
Burst Speed: 121.7 million bytes/sec
Sustained Speed: 64.2 million bytes/sec

Anyway, with this fast a machine I really shouldn't have jitters at all in previewing video should I?? By the way using Vegas 5b and dotnet 1.1 without SP1.

Any help appreciated!!

Better to have the OS (or, at least, the pagefile) on a eparate drive, not just a different partition on the same drive.

Even better: one a separate drive on a different controller (not a master/slave situation on one controller).

Right now the pagefile is on C drive along with the operating system. Should I put the page file on the 2nd Data partition D drive?

Too make sure I understand correctly, if I had 2 different drives a 20 gig and a 300 gig, I would have operating system and pagefile both on the 20 gig C drive??
Thanks!

I'd empty out the 2nd drive completely and put a fixed-size pagefile on it. Then use it for data. (Or partition the 2nd drive so it has a smallish section for the pagefile and the rest for the data...does pretty much the same thing)

Not optimal, since "memory" and data will both be written to the same drive, but better than the pagefile and OS & programs on the same drive.

I prefer having the pagefile on a RAID 0 (striped) set with nothing else but the /temp directory. Speeds up the system a lot.

hard drive cache?

hard drive cache?

OK, I'm planning on getting at least one more hard drive, maybe 2 to separate these windows tasks. I know I need 7200 rpm drive, does it make any difference if it is 2 mg cache as opposed to 8 mg?? Anybody running drives with 2 mg caches????

thanks!!!

A bigger cache is better, and the price difference should be negligible. ($1 on the drives I just bought...makes me wonder why someone would by the 2 meg ones...)
