What you are experiencing is normal. There is no editor that uses visual plugins and doesn't get a beat down. This is why you are supposed to add the plugins at the very end, after you're done editing.
But some affect it more than others. If it's slowing down "massively" for some light color correction, that's a problem; it shouldn't be affected much.
But if you're adding, say, Magic Bullet, or some serious blurs or diffusion, or just a big stack of FX, then it would be normal.
If it's just the slow preview that's bugging you, you can pre-render the affected clips. On a machine as grunty as yours, that probably wouldn't take long at all.
I agree. you cant get around the slow real-time previews once plug-ins are used. I use a monster 8-core machine and HDV with a color corrector still slows down the preview.
I pre-render (shift + B) when i wanna check the timing of an effect/sequence - increase the dynamic ram for longer previews (preferences -> video). I would use as much as it allows (1024MB) ...mine is set to 3712MB (max for 32 bit) through the "internal" preferances tab which gives me a significantly larger pre-render duration then the default 1024MB but involves "hacking" the program...works for me on my machine.
Another option would be to render out half rez mp4's and use that as a preview...my machine churns them out faster then real-time, so it does not harm the workflow. I use them as edit dallies.
cheers guys.. was hoping there might be some sort of super duper pro graphics card out there that would take on the load and fix the slow preview.. i guess not..
