Vegas HDV preview

Is 7.0 really that much better in HDV previewing?

I have 6.0 and the previewing is terrible. I can watch full-res uncompressed .m2t files using VLC Media Player. In Vegas, I get maybe a frame every 3 seconds. I'm planning on buying an HDV camera soon and I want to have confidence that I will be able to get better previewing. In settings, I set the max amount of RAM possible to the previewing window, and I noticed no difference at all.

Is there something wrong with my installation of Vegas, or does everybody experience this issue?

Yes, the preview in Vegas 7 is a whole lot better for native M2T files. I’d say almost twice as fast depending on your processor.

In Vegas 7 I’m getting full frame rates (29.976) for M2T files in Preview Auto mode. The same file in Vegas 6 on Preview Auto runs at 17 fps. In Preview Full on Vegas 7 I get 10 fps while the same mode with the same M2T file in Vegas 6 plays at 5 fps.

You can always download the trial and see for yourself on your PC.

Sadly, I'm afraid Johnny's got it about right. V6 just couldn't do HDV period, IMHO. I got V7 with high hopes, and while it's a big improvement, why oh why can't it keep up with a simple media player like VLC or MPC?? Who knows.

If you want to see what your hardware is capable of, download the trial of Edius Pro 4, it's wonderfully tuned for performance. Real-time playback and for the most part, filtering too. Too bad it falls short on features and is expensive.

I find it disturbing V7 can't play back full-res at full frame rates, but I can't buy any more NLEs right now ;) and at preview-half its smooth so I'll live with that. Oddly, using CineForm doesn't improve much, the only reason I bought it is to use CF codec from other apps like VDub/AviSynth.

I'm curious though JohnnyRoy, I'd say my results are similar to yours but I'm guessing by eyeballing it- how are you 'measuring' your playback framerates? Thanks for any info,

I’m using the frame rate that is displayed in the preview window of Vegas. It shows you how may frames per second you are getting at the bottom.

LOL odd that I hadn't noticed that before - guess it's cuz I was previewing on a 2nd montior most of the time- never paid much attention to the little preview pane. Thanks for the wake up there ;-)
