Vegas Erratic Behavior -- Freezes, Hangs, etc.

Anyone ever run into this issue?

When using Vegas and after plopping multiple media into the media bin, the program halts for close to 30 seconds before resuming? This appears to be particularly common when switching apps (like to Sound Forge, for instance) and returning to Vegas. The hourglass will appear and it's unresponsive, almost like the computer has locked up, although every other application continues to run perfectly.

I found an inkling of info on this issue on the creative cow forum, but there were no answers other than musings about F5 to rebuild audio peaks.

Some users speculated that Vegas has a difficult time dealing with clips that have different audio sampling rates in the media pool.

This is somewhat frustrating for me, as my current project is comprised of clips from my Panasonic DV cam and also my Olympus digital camera... (720x480x24 vs. 320x240 clips at 48,000Hz and 8,000Hz respectively)

Are there any known work-arounds for this?

Post-edit:
I should add that I use a firewire hard drive for my storage and have Vegas installed on a separate disk.
I've never had any issues in the past with write-errors and have been running a hell of a lot of disk repair and check-up utilities to ensure my firewire drive's integrity, with no luck in turning up anything concrete. The only thing I can think of is the sampling rate causing the problems.

I don't know that there's any evidence for not being able to deal with different audio sample rates. Way too many variables here; not enough info. Could easily be a Windows issue and not a Vegas issue.

Are you working with any external hard drives? Are you connected to the Internet? Is your media on a separate drive from Windows? Are you different media clips on the same drive?

Lots of things which could be in play here.

I've been doing some research since posting and have discovered that my source files, which are quicktime .mov from my digital camera, aren't in the right format for Vegas. Looks like I have to somehow convert these .movs to the right DV codec in .avi format.

Vegas *does* recognize them and allow them to work, but the unreliability is what makes me think it prefers the standard DV codec in .avi format because I've never experienced any strange behavior when dealing with that.

Thanks for the reply -- any other suggestions or ideas? Does it sound like I'm on the right track? ;)

Oh, FWIW, I'm still using Vegas 4.
