Vegas+DVD vs. Adobe Package

I know everyone always asks the vegas vs. premiere vs. avid vs. blah blah blah questions, and everyone has their own opinions, BUT....

I am a Premiere 6.0 user and it is high time to upgrade.

I'm buying educational versions because my current project definitely qualifies and it's all I can afford anyway.

I can get Vegas 6 + DVD for $299. I am certain I will also need a book or tutorial (e.g. Gary Kleiner's for ~$80) if I'm going to learn the totally different workflow of Vegas.

I can get Premiere Pro 1.5, After Effects 6.5 Std, Audition 1.5, and Encore DVD 1.5 together for $429. I can probably figure out PPro on my own, so may not need to spend for a tutorial. I have no idea how to use After Effects or the others, though, so I may need some support there...

My question is, not just NLE vs. NLE, but how do these *packages* compare for the money? I've heard Vegas has very nice audio capability -- is it as good or better than PPro plus Adobe Audition? And as for visual effects -- will vegas offer me as much as PPro plus After Effects? How does Vegas DVD compare to Adobe Encore?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. (I'm asking the Vegas group first because I think I secretly want to be convinced to try Vegas. I'm not sure why -- it must be some strange marketing thing operating completely in my subconscious or something... :)

Download the trial Version of vegas 6 and dvda and see if you like it... it takes some getting used to if ur used to the premiere interface but it's so much more powerful than premiere... i have my copy of vegas on order... i switched from premiere pro... vegas has the best 24p support.... plus when i did a lot of importing and exporting with premiere, i'd get dropouts... vegas has NEVER done that to me... so i switched.....

That low Vegas price is through online school software resellers and the such. You just have to prove that you're a current student at an accredited school, and *poof*, you get the MASSIVE discount. But, as he mentioned, some companies only offer the standard/entry level software for that price ... thankfully, Vegas doesn't have a bunch of different levels ... it's just all pro.

As far as Encore vs. Architect, I've used both. Yeah, I learned on Architect, but it was still so user friendly that I could teach myself. Encore on the other hand took a little more fiddling around to figure it out, and in the end I still prefer Architect. The new 3.0 can do everything that Encore does vs. Encore did offer a few more options than Architect's old 2.0.

Also, Vegas can run on a MUCH slower system than most of the other NLE's so if you've not got the fastest, hottest system out, odds are that a different NLE may hog the majority of its resources, making it less stable.

I went from premiere pro 7 and Encore to Vegas+DVD and have never looked back. Premiere and Encore are some of the buggiest programs ever. I can't tell you how many Encore projects became currupt and would not let me use them. Vegas+DVD also gives you the 5.1 AC3 encoder for free, meaning you can make and burn 5.1 surround sound DVD's with the software you have. Premiere pro and all the other crap will let you make a 5.1 surround sound project, but in order to burn it, you have to buy the $300 encoder to do so. So add another $300 bucks to that list, as Vegas+DVD gives it to you for free. Vegas 6 vs Premiere Pro 1.5 will win hands down in every way. I have used both, and reall see no reason to ever use a premiere program ever again.
