Vegas: dual monitor?

I read a reply to one of my posts that Vegas doesn't support dual monitors. Yet in my Vegas 4 manual on page 5 it lists "Dual monitor support" as one of it's features. I took that to mean that one can use 2 monitors while editing. Am I wrong?

Anyone out there use dual monitors with Vegas? I'm planning on buying my computer within the next couple weeks and I'd like to know if I should add that extra monitor to the order. ???

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

yes I have used dual monitors, and now use a single monitor and a TV. I think when you read dual monitor, they were refering to dual preview, one being before and one being after previews.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

What I was referring to was the "two-monitor paradigm" -- two "monitor windows" onscreen, with one showing the timeline and the other the "source" (i.e. the clip you're working with, trimming, etc.). With that paradigm, you can, while planning a cut, look at the "out point" of the previous clip on the timeline while selecting the "in point" of the new clip, so that they match well. In Vegas, you only have one on-screen monitor window, which will show either the timeline or the trimmer image, but you can't see both at the same time, as FCP does by default, and Premiere does if you set it up to do so.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

I have version 4 Vegas and use 2 monitors. a 17 inch and a 15 inch. No probelm at all. You can have the preview window on one side the rest on the main monitor..... it's great. :)

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Hi Gregi_23 and Peter how did you realize your configuration i've got the same problem of Jubal: using a TV out with desktop extention i can't separate the prev from the timeline (like in Premiere) and place it only on TV.
How did you setup?

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Do you mean that you have one monitor and one TV, and you're using the TV as a second monitor? Then you're trying to put the preview window on the TV as sort of a workaround, instead of routing out through firewire and your camera/VTR?

If so, I don't think this is an ideal solution. You won't be looking at a true TV out; you'll be looking at something that's meant for a computer monitor on a TV. I've never done this specifically, but I've put my desktop on a TV screen, and I can only imagine what the preview window looks like. :-/

But maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're doing.

But YES, I would love to have the preview window above the timeline.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

HI Jubal, HI Maurowww,

I did a couple of pictures for you so you can see what I mean. Here is a screen shoot of my 2 monitors. As you can see the program and the preview is completely apart.

and here is a picture how the 2 monitor look like on my desk. ;)

Sorry if I sound now very basic but sometimes if somebody else is telling me something it’s better to start from the beginning.
In order for you to have the screen split apart like I have you need a dual video card. But this alone won’t do the trick. In the monitor setup (windows) you have to tell it that you like to have two separate monitors. If you don’t adjust that it will do exactly what Jubal has…………. You have to stretch Vegas over both monitors…… :'( and you don’t get anywhere at all.
Now last but not least I show you a picture where it is possible to put the preview over the time line……… if I understand it correctly…….. if not please tell me.

If you need more info please tell me

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

I understood what you meant, Greg.

I, too, found that I could put the timeline under the preview window by shortening the main Vegas window -- but it reverts to fullscreen on startup, and I have to move or minimize the preview window to shorten it again.

In any case, I've found a configuration that works for me.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Hey Gregor,
I'm trying a demo of Vegas right now and have a dual monitor setup. When I detach and drag the preview window over to the second monitor I can't enlarge the preview window as large as you have. It maxes out at 300 some-odd by. What screen resolutions are you running at?

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

PrestonH
the main monitor is set at 1152x864 and the little one at 1024x768.
Does that help??

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Jubal....... yes when you start it back up...... its all f..... up again........... hahahahahahaahahahah I never use it like that anway. :P

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Gregor,
Thanks. I'll play with resolution settings. When I have the desktop span both monitors (2048x768 w/dualhead card) I can break apart most of the windows it remembers positions on restarts.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

hi Preston i've got a Geforce4 dual sets "1024 x768"x2 desktop extension... but nothing. How do you "break apart" windows? (where i'd to clik to drag it?)

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

You grab the raised line which runs down the side of the subwindow to detach it from the main window. Then, you can put the subwindow anywhere you want, even outside the main Vegas window. You can then size it, reshape it, do whatever you'd be able to do with a normal window.

The only section you can't seem to be able to do this with is the timeline.

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

tryin and trying... i've got to click on the vertical line under the "X" (close) of the window that i wan't and the drag it on second monitor 8)

Re: Vegas: dual monitor?

Thanks Jubal28 for the how to on Dual Monitor setup. It saved me a large headache.
