Vegas drops frames during Video Capture using Firewire

I have this project in tapes recorded like 2 years ago. I am trying to video capture through the firewire but one of the clips drops like 11 frames and no matter what I do it will still do it. What do I need to do to prevent this?

Could be a bad spot on the tape. Is it the same 11 frames every time?
Actually it is a 20 minutes footage but I didn't actually pay attention how many frames it dropped because I tried it like 3 times. I'll check it again and let you know.
Thank you very much David for your fast replay:)

Finally I found the solution for the the (drop frames) problem. I had to do another user account in my computer with nothing running in the system like antivirus and spyware protection and it worked good. Now the other problem I am having is that in one of my clips from the same tape in the video there are boxes covering the video and nothing plays right. The audio is good. I don't know what is going on. When I play the clip with VLC player the video plays right. In Vegas, Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic I get the video with problems. Now I must state that this clip is part of the whole tape and the rest cames out OK. Now this is the screenshot I got from the clip with problems. I hope someone can help because I am going nuts here, it doesn't make any sense at all:

Ps:I must mention that I have Video Captured this tape before and it worked fine (with previous version of Vegas 6)

This looks like tape dropout, but then you are saying that you can view it perfectly with VLC player but not with MPC,MP & VEGAS?

The following will help determine where the problem lies...
If you are using a PC running Windows XP then just go to the Display Properties in control panel, click on the settings tab, then click on the Advanced button, select the Troubleshooting tab and move the Hardware Acceleration slider dead left and apply the changes.

Are you still getting the blocky footage in MP Classic & Vegas??

If not and it plays normally then you may have a CODEC problem and you may have to remove & re-install the relative codec package (whichever one you are using... Klite, Miro codec pack there's heaps out there).

This might be a bit of a hack, but if it's just a frame here and there, have you considered just editing those frames - duplicate a previous frame - and/or split and re-align the audio track?

it is the whole clip 9 minutes that's what is driving me nuts.

This is the exact same effect i got when trying to capture thru my firewire. Ive given up.
I have got good news friends. After playing with the clip for a while I found out that this strange event usually happens when the clip just beginns. All I had to do is fast-forward the clip a little past the pause (which is the beginning of the clip) till the immages started to show and then video capture it. Everything went really smooth. Still I can't explain why Vegas does this but at least I am happy I found a solution :)

Vegas will sometimes get a little confused when capturing with scene detect on, when the camera switches in spots where is was paused then resumed. You can also get dropped frames if you have the preview window set to display video during capture, especially if you have an Nvidia 6800 without a certain plugin to enable a specific type of hardware accleration. I used to have no problem capturing, then I updated my video drivers, and within 20 seconds of capture I had over 100 dropped frames. It was a result of the CPU getting pegged (this with a Dual core AMD 2400), because the video card was no longer helping. I've also had dropped frames during particularly short shots (again with scene detect on), as well as strange audio anomalies like chirping and stuttering.

Now, I make sure I have the camera rolling for at least 5-10 seconds before the action starts, and begin capture during that initial time "buffer". After downloading and installing the Nvidia utility (localized to the 6800 series only) and giving more time at the beginning and end of a cut, I rarely have that problem.

Glad to hear you got you issues worked out. Sometimes I get around this by using the in and out point in Premiere, just for capture. It takes longer, but I am able to begin capture to the frame, and with as many in and out points for as many clips as I want, which automates the process.

Yes, I never had this problem before. Now that I come to think about it it all started when I updated the nvidia driver GeForce 6600 PCI with the new updated driver in nvida website. My question to you is: Do you have a link you can provide me so that I can install the correct driver for my video card. I looked into Nvidia website and I don't see any specific option for my 6600

Depasan & Matt > I dont know what you mean by a little forward but i think you mean to get to a portion where the actual movie is recorded, sort of like letting the software analyze the frame structure etc and regularize to that. But none of this worked for me. Ive got a dual core machine. Ive tried waiting for a long capture and all i get is warped video. Then ive tried capturing from the middle of the footage and the same results. Is there any stand alone application that people use only to capture video ?

Warped video? I'm not sure what that means. The problem Depasan and I were having is mainly a dropped frame one, something that was more the result of the video card. But I have also had problems with dropped framed and audio screw ups based on dropped frames when scene detect was on. A few frames get out of whack and the beginning of a recording, which then causes the audio to get odd, because the audio and video are not properly aligned.

Yes, there is a stand alone application for capture, and it is right inside Vegas. I never capture from Vegas while it is open. Inside your main Vegas directory in Windows, you have this:

vegas.jpg

The highlighted file is the capture utility. I make a shortcut of it and put it in the Vegas' folder in the Start menu. Then I just run that to capture. Works fine.

I don't know what you mean by "warped video" but I didn't have that problem either. I did exactly what Matt here said and everything is working great. And Matt, thanks for the advice for the standalone app for Video Capture. I already did a shortcut and put it on my Vegas Start Menu:)

Awesome, great advice man!!!
