Vegas Doesn't Read Video File

Hi guys, I'm trying to edit a video which I just downloaded, a Bleach episode. Currently Windows just reads it as a video file and the icon on the desktop is the the sort of greyish one with the film reel in the top right corner. Windows Media Player can play it fine, but when I open it with Vegas it says the Video "stream attributes could not be determined" and I can only see the audio. How I can get vegas to read the video? Thanks :)

Welcome to the club. You will notice i posted a very similar thread i assume the thread even just disappeared after getting just one or two replies etc. LOL. I had a net downloaded video which showed the usually windows media player files type of icon. Then it played perfectly in media player or just about any other player in the system. The same system ruuning vegas can play the file well from the preview button. But if you bring it into the timeline it stutters and only audio comes out. With frozen frames. I rendered out and got the same type of result in that too.

Plainman007: did you uncheck the Ignore Third Party Codec options? Did it help?

XxDestry: try that, too.

Vegas should be able to use any codec you have on your system. Except for the ones that specifically prevent anything but their "native" program from using it. (But that's usually VSTs in audio programs.)

There is no universal codec, but unchecking that option will let all those other codecs show up.

Hey Genjerdan, i looked up that menu. Its actually "IGNORE THIRD PARTY DV CODECS". Not applicable to general codecs. Thats the toggle which enables vegas to use its own superior codec for rendering DV formats. David Jimerson,, you there ?? kindly share your opinion.

I am having the same problem as you are but I did notice that the file was encoded using Divx. This may or may not have something to do with it.
