Vegas Codec Question

Matt Grunau

Adobe Demigod
Hi all. I capture all of my video in Vegas 6. Under the General tab in the Preferences, the Ignore Third Party Plugins box is checked, and the Use Microsoft DV Codec box is unchecked (they were this way be default).

However, when I open the footage in After Effects and click on the video file once to show its properties in the Project window, After Effects says that the file is encoded with Microsoft DV codec.

This may be why I have problems with Media player not playing rendered clips properly:

Any one know why Vegas' codec does not show in the file properties?

Am I not capturing/encoding it properly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't believe Vegas' codec is available to any application other than Vegas. Spot would know more, but I think it's something that's only available internally.

Thanks guys. I don't care for Microsoft's DV codec, and was hoping to get away from it. My video card has some overlay quirks (odd for an Nvidia), and I get odd results.

Alex: not yet, though I have a feeling things will look better.

Rapier, it will read as the Microsoft codec, and AE will render back TO the microsoft codec, but the codec out of Vegas is completely proprietary. Hopefully this will change someday, but for the moment, Windows reads it as MSDV even though it's not. GSpot will report the same thing. For going to/roundtripping AE, I'd recommend exporting as sequential PNG/TGA, or 4:2:2 YUV, BitJazz, BlackMagic, or other higher quality/less compressed codec.

Thanks. I have been able to render uncompressed for short projects, but I have a few plays and dance comps that won't allow me to do that.
