Vegas closes when using Print to Tape

Hi

When I use the "Print to Tape" option in Vegas it goes through the rendering process fine but when it activates the camera and starts to export, Vegas suddenly closes. The camera keeps recording nothing while "Vegas has left the building". Not a frame gets exported. I have checked memory i.e. swap file and temp directory and there is plenty of space. I have 2 GB of ram and the project is only 5 minutes long without audio. Interesting.. Vegas doesn't crash in the normal sense, it just closes.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks,

JF

Which version of Vegas?
This would suggest you've got a sound card and 1394 card, or 1394 card and video card sharing resources.

Spot,

I'm using Vegas 6.0c. 1394 shows to have its own IRQ but I'll have a look at the mb specs on PCI slots and sharing, could very well be someting there. Also this only happens when using the "print video to tape" from the tools menu (creating temp files) NOT when exporting a rendered avi through the "Capture - Print to Tape" off the file menu.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the sharing again.

This may not help you at all, but I prefer printing-to-tape via the capture app, not Vegas itself. You should try this, I think it is WAY BETTER for a bunch of reasons. Vegas creates a bunch of little files for print-to-tape that are basically unuseful for any other purpose. Not sure if this is practical for large projects, but I use a workflow that goes like this...

Render a full-res DV AVI file. Then from there, I do a bunch of encodes off of that file, encode to: MPEG2 for DVD, WMV and MOV for Web, MP4/H264 for iPod/PSP, and finally I can use the same file to print an archive back to tape. That makes for one solid render, and a bunch of slighly quicker encodes to other formats (b/c you only to the nasty stuff once: fx, filters, transitions, titles, trackmotion, cropping, etc.). Anyway, maybe this approach would work for you too?

Thanks, that is exactly how I ended up exporting my video and I will probably use that method in the future. But today I did some investigative work and found my problem with the Vegas Print Video to Tape option. When I "un" check the "Include Audio" box in "Custom" settings it crashes every time. But when using the NTSC DV template as is, it works fine. Since I had no audio in my project at all it seemed like the logical choice... but it just wouldn't let me. And yes I "un" checked "Play test tone" also. Curious if anyone else has ever had this problem.. could be a bug in Vegas?

Ahh....didn't think to ask what template you were using. DV requires the audio stream in the print, even if there is no audio.
