What plugins help with the hiss of audio?

This is a pretty broad and open topic. Not sure if you're looking for things like:

Don't forget to put a 2-pop in at the begining of every audio track.

To make dialogue editing easier, be sure to layer each character's audio on a separate track, so you can export/render each track separately for your post mix.

Things like this?

You should use a compressor plugin which is built in to vegas software. Also if that is not enough then you might consider getting a mastering program like soundforge or wavelab to help you clean up the audio. Another thing you can also add a room tone track to help cover the hiss..but if it is too much then it will be hard to take out so you might have to resort to ADR and redo the audio that way.

That's a good addition - always get lots of room tone. When I'm mixing, I always get at least a minute of solid room tone - you avoid hearing loops in the tone when you're layering it in later.

I always try to capture some room tone...3 to 5 seconds at each mic location and slate them so I know which is which. Then they can later be used in noise reduction to remove the noise as needed. While I'm sure there are many good plugins out there, I've tried several but never found as plesing a result as what I get in - and I hate to say it - CoolEdit. A very inexpensive and old program, but I love it's noise reduction tool. Never have found one that works better. SoundForge came with a one that I have used, and it works pretty good.
