Hey there,

So, i've had a z1u for a long time, but i've never used tired editing the ffotage. lately i've been wondering what the best workflow would be, using vegas, without purchasing any plugins like cineform. Also, i cant really figure out how to get the cineform intermediate to work. the vegas help file doesnt really have too much information.

Youll hardly find any feedback on the Z1U. Not many people work with HDV. Lucky for you I DO ! lol. Same cam. I have been using this cam for a couple of shoots. I dont know about cineform but Vegas comes with a "light version" of cineform inbuilt. Ive seen Vegas 7 performing very well with HDV. My machine is a 3.4 Ghz dual core + 2 gb ram. It captured HDV from the Z1U without a hicupp. What do you want to know in particular. Ive edited footage without any special plugins and it worked great with FX and CC with the above machine. Ive one slow mo etc etc. Shoot with the HD 1080i mode on. Make sure you dont choose cineframe modes. Ive heard they are horrible. Dont change modes or record different media on the same tape. Even with a blank gap between. The video is recorded onto normal DV tape as m2t files. This is the raw HDV fomat. It occupies the same space on the HDD as DV does. Then hook up the cam to your firewire port. Switch off and switch on the camera. Then Vegas will identify the device as connected and ask if you want to autocapture. You might sometimes have to go into the capture menu and select firewire device and choose your camera from identified list. Then hit auto capture and capture away. The raw m2t files start assembling up in your media bin. It handles almost like DV within Vegas.

well, i think my machine is probably powerful enough, 2.8ghz dual core amd with 4 gb of ram. and It captures HDV just fine, but i cant figure out how to use the built in cineform on vegas 7.

Hi dont think theres any option for you to select. By default it uses the cineform engine in some way internally to work with HDV on the timeline. Im right now working on a render with hdv footage. Its playing back without drop frames with cc applied (preview setting to PREVIEW AUTO). I think thats fair enough.
