Vegas and the RED ONE

Hi guys,

I'm going to be getting a RED ONE soon, so will be editing in super super HD in Vegas :) ... at the moment my computer isn't hacking HD video editing very well, does anyone know what upgrade should make it fast enough for HD editing in vegas, and make it fast enough to hack the RED ONE footage?

My current specs (not hacking HD editing):
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0GHz) 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache
RAM: 4GB
Graphics card: XFX 9400GT 1GB DDR2
OS: Windows XP
Editing Prog: Sony Vegas

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt

I'm not sure if you are going to like what I have to say and some people may disagree with me.

I really don't think Vegas is up to editing Red one footage just yet, don't get me wrong I'm a Vegas lover have been since V3, but My experience has been that vegas just isn't a smart enough app yet. In as much as it doesn't know how to use system resources properly.

I have been busy doing a Bluray master from 10bit 2k dpx files and Vegas is just unable to work with that much data. Now the workstation we have is an absolute monster so it's not the hardware that is the issue.
16core AMD, 32gb ecc ram, OS is on a 250gb ssd drive with a 1.3tb raid (6x 250gb drives in raid0) with an ATI FireGL 8700 graphics card. I have attached an image to show how much of the cpu vegas was actually using, keep in mind that what you see is the max amount that it used for the full 16 hour render ( thats 16hours just to compress the files to AVC, ie no effects on the footage at all ).

I haven't worked with Red footage yet so I can't speak about that directly, but having seen how Vegas works with 2k files I would say be very careful about starting a full edit with the current release.

Having said all that, the most important thing you can do first is build a good raid, it's no good having a fast cpu if your drives can't feed it data quick enough.

sorry for the long post.
Nick

This is not accurate measure for Vegas. Vegas is more optimized for Intel rather than AMD, and it also depends on the kind of data you throw at it and its encoder/decoder it's using for that data. Therefore, while one format might not work, the other might work better. For example, Vegas is super-slow for Canon 5D MOV h.264 files, but it's pretty fast with AVCHD h.264 files at the same resolution. The reason being, it's using a different decoder for the AVCHD files, plus the AVCHD format itself has "helpers" in it for better editing support.

Having said all that, I don't expect miracles with Red One footage either, since it's a newly supported format, and because these files are huge by nature.

I do agree with you, Vegas is super fast when I work with my HVX footage and most compressed formats, but with the higher end film formats it falls short.

I just don't want someone getting excited after spending cash on upgrades and only end up getting 10fps if that, when they start the edit.

Maybe Sony will pull finger and get the files working properly, but I would only expect that in V10.

Plus we must be careful when we say that it is optimized to work with intel as Sony and AMD have been working together for some time,http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS255201+23-Apr-2009+BW20090423

Not to mention the fact that he was using a server with multiple cpu's and from the looks of the screen shot vegas does not use muti processors. I would try an Intel i7 cpu with at least 6gig of ram and a gts250 nvidea card. Also use 64bit OS with 64bit vegas. This will give you 8 cores. This is what I would try...just my 2 cents worth...and being the the PC biz for 12 years.

cheers guys, reason I got the dual core is I've found Vegas is more stable on Win XP and doesn't tend to use 8 cores, so I'd rather have a more powerful dual core than a less power ful (per core) 8 core, where only 1 or 2 cores are being used by vegas. Does that make sense?!

EDIT: I have a mac pro anyway, 8 core doofer, its just win xp is not stable on it.
