Vegas and RAM

Hi,

I had 2 gb of ram on my dual core 3.4 ghz workstation. The Motherboard has 4 slots total. I now put in 1 more gb of ram on the 3rd slot. I cant see any huge difference in performance. But my main question is should i move in eve numbers,, i mean like either 2 gb or 4gb. Will 3gb being odd in number slow down the way the system and vegas handles ram. All are 667mhz DDR2.

Also since i ugraded ram. Is there a panel in the vegas options where i can allocate more Ram for Vegas to use ? I ofcourse increased the ram prview amount to 1 gb. since ive now got 3 gb of system ram. Any other tweaks to utilize more ram I woudlnt mind putting in another 1GB to make 4 gb. But will vegas and the system use this ?

Yes. For 32bit Windows with default kernel settings that is. Which is a good thing, because the rest 1 GB will be used by Windows itself, so Vegas will have the full 2 GBs all for itself. There is a trick to make apps use more RAM in 32bit Windows, but this results to frequent crashes, so I don't recommend it

64bit Windows can use the full GBs of RAM without restrictions, but Vegas 32bit crashes quite a bit on 64bit Windows, so until these issues are fixed in the future, you are stuck with the best solution so far which is: 3 GBs of RAM on a 32bit WinXP PRO. Vista is also so-so for Vegas' stability you see.

Yeah..tell me about it. I saw Vista for the first time and hated it instantly. Unneccesary flaunting of the interface. Im always gonna stick to XP Pro. Till some more mature os arrives from Windows. If i add another GB making the system 4Gb in all, will it boost performance. Some people say ram shoudl be upped in even nos or pairs of the same time. So will 4gb help ?

Raster > No point comparing a compaq nw 8400 to this situation. Thats a ready made factory product. Mine is an assembled system from scratch. But assembled or not most people say it doesnt use more than 3 gb. Maybe you upgraded from 1 or 2 to 4 gb directly and are thereby seeing an improvement. But the improvement might be only to the effects of 3 gb. If you had 3 gb and then jumped to 4 gb and saw a difference between the two then that would be some noteworthy benchmarking. Maybe the 4th gb isnt doing anything at all. Just maybe.

If you're using DDR RAM, then you must install the RAM in pairs. If you have three sticks of RAM in your machine, it won't activate DDR.

Cheap RAM isn't always worse (or conversely, expensive RAM isn't always better). I worked at a PC shop where the brand name RAM we sold for more money cost us less than the generic RAM we sold for less. Buy based on specs and warranty. If it doesn't perform to specs, send it back.

I use 4gb of ram with 64bit xp pro sp2 with Vegas Pro 8 and have no problems. I also have set in bios that the memory hole is enabled to take full advantage of the 4gbs. Otherwise the kernal will restrict the ram setting and only shows 3.96g of ram when checking my system data.
