Vegas and HD

Not sure if this is true or not but I just saw an ad at the top of the page advertising Vegas. Says it does HD, is this true? I thought there were no PC based HD NLEs.

actually, you could edit HD resolutions all the way back in version 4. What is new to 6 is that it natively supports the HDV codec, and some other HD codecs.

SO you mean when the HVX200 comes out I dont have to worry about what to edit on as long as I have Vegas? Peace out Premiere Pro, its been nice while it lasted :)

Yes, Vegas is format-agnostic and resolution-agnostic. It's been able to edit HD for a couple of years. Version 5.0 has presets for HDV, and version 6.0 includes capture and print-to-tape for HDV.

If you had uncompressed HD files from HDCAM-SR (or, well, uncompressed HD from any source, really), Vegas could edit it too.

Well . . .

That's unclear. We *assume* (hope) an update of Vegas will have the DVCPRO codecs by then, but right NOW, no, unless you install the codecs yourself.

Thanks guys, it looks like I'll be making the switch from Premiere to Vegas very soon. Are the codecs out right now that would allow me to manually install them into Vegas or would I have to wait for a new build? Thanks!

For proper integration, we're waiting to see how they'll be implemented. Sony may develop a codec, or they may not. MainConcept sells a DVCPRO50 codec, so maybe they'll make a DVCPRO-HD version (although that would be for sale). Avid's codec can work in Quicktime mode, but you'd need an extraordinarily fast computer to make that a viable editing solution in Vegas.

Vegas is codec-agnostic as well as being resolution agnostic.

As soon as "someone" makes a DVXPRO-HD codec for Windows, it will work in Vegas (unless they cripple the codec).

I was editing HD-sized files (animations) up to 2K back in 2002 in Vegas. Those files were HUGE, but there were no problems on a 1.5 GHz Pentium with 256 Megs memory(!).
