Vegas and Frame Resizing

How does Vegas handle resizing during editing/rendering?

If I have a 1080 frame on a 720 timeline (Vegas automatically fits it), and then resize the frame again with Event Pan/Crop, does it resize/crop the 1080 version of the frame, or the resized 720 frame?

I want to know how much re-framing I can do with a 1080 image on a 720 timeline before degradation sets-in. If Vegas works with the original sized frame, then I can reframe quit heavily. If it resizes an already resized frame then there's not much that can be done.

I'm using Raylight and HVX 1080i/24PA footage if that makes any difference.

I highly suggest you set the project properties to 1080p, to use the real settings for the source material. And then, only at the end export at 720p or whatever else you need. But do the editing in the source sizes.

Use BEST when you render to a different size.

I would disagree here on the frame size settings here -- if your intent is to use 1080 in a 720 timeline in order to take advantage of the frame size difference so you can move around in the frame, then use a 720 timeline.

What's the reason? When Vegas renders does it go back to the original frames? It's okay to get technical with me. :)

Because you can show/see pixel-for-pixel quality when you're using a larger frame on a smaller timeline. Plus, there's less work for Vegas to do in the render.

You can do some re-framing without any loss at all if you have 1080 source in a 720 project. Here is what you do: Go into Pan/Crop on your 1080 source and manually set the Height to 720 in the Position settings on the left. The framing box you now see is what you can safely work with and get no loss in quality because Pan/Crop in Vegas maintains the original source resolution before it crops. Feel free to move this box around and re-frame as you like knowing your output will be a full 720 out of your original 1080 source with no degradation.

I'm popping between a 720 and 1080 timeframe to check the difference. I'm importing some 2K footage which needs to be heavily cropped, so will do all the testing then.
