Vegas and Dell....

Anyone ever do editing on a Dell Laptop?

I've read conflicting reports that their firewire implementation stinks. Any horror stories? Debunkers?

Core duo 1.6 Dell Insperon. It flies with DV editing (haven't done any HD). No firewire problems at all. I got the 7,200rpm hard disk option and the thing runs very smooth.

Editing on a 15.1 wide screen is fine, just make sure you get the highest resolution you can (1680x1050). I pipe mine out to a Dell 20.1 wide screen monitor and it is a dream.

I would format your HD when you get it and install a fresh version of windows, as Dell bogs the thing down with so many little user programs, instant messaging, etc...

Hi, is that the e1505 model?

regarding screens, since my cam is 720p only wouldn't I be better off with 1280x800 rez? since it's closer to the native rez?

no, you want max rez so you can fit as much "stuff" on the screen. You'll want to see your preview window, timeline, start menu... etc.... The rez will still display your other footage properly...

oh and I own an Inspiron 8600 (old I know) and it still runs AE7 and Vegas 6 just fine. A little slow on rendering but that's because its 3 yrs old! Never had a problem or heard of any such problem w/ DELL's "firewire implementation". I have tons of customers and I buy them all DELL's when it comes to laptops or Servers.

I have the E1705 and just edited our 720 HD dramafest entry on it with no issues.

Also used it to cap a lot of the footage via HDRack with no issues. It made a decent monitor on set as well.

I would agree about doing a fresh install when you get it. I did NOT do that on this machine, and there is a lot of crap in there. There is some piece of crap in there called PCMService, which has a massive memory leak...urgh...

One odd thing, and I have not researched this at all, but when rendering and even exporting from a 53 gig master to a QT h264, my older P4 editing machine was a LOT faster than the core duo E1705 at the same tasks. Again, I have no idea why, but it was weird...

Thanks for the info,

Do you have the Hi rez screen or the 1280x800?

Where you able to focus with dv rack?

How about using a 1280x800 Dell with DV rack as a monitor? With a 720p camera would I still be better off with the higher rez?

It's my understanding that when you move away from a laptop's native rez that you lose sharpness. That would seem to argue for the lower rez if you plan to employ the laptop as a field monitor with 720p cameras.

I got the super-duper screen, whichever one is the most expensive add-on. Yeah, it works for focusing fine.

Note to self: "Order Super-duper screen when placing order for Dell Notebook..."

Thanks man.

Mark,

I believe that the PCMService is part of the Dell MultiMedia Experience. I think this is installed by Dell on a lot of PC's (I have a number of Dell computers). It's used for playing DVD's and other multi-media.

If you're familiar with the 'msconfig' program, you set the PCMService so that it won't auto start when you boot up your PC.

Dell Inspirion 9200 (Dec-2004 model) with 17" widescreen 1920 x 1200 pixels and 1 GB RAM memory; Pentium Centrino 2 ghz processor. Works great with Vegas 7 and DVD-Architect 4.
