Vegas ADR help

Hi all,

I am looking to do some ADR in Vegas Pro 8.

I have a shotgun mic attached to an Alesis mixer attached to my computer via USB.

When I press "arm for record" on the audio track in Vegas the levels meter appears, but it has a constant "noise" of -24db.

This still happens even when I turn down all the levels on the mixer as well.

How do I get rid of this inbuilt "noise" so I can get some clean ADR sound?

If it's still happening even with the mixer levels turned down, that would seem to exclude background noise in the room, so points to cable noise perhaps? Definitely worth trying with different cables, in case you have a dodgy one. And check your audio cables aren't running alongside power cables for example.

I have no experience with Alesis mixers, but have certainly had a lot of similar 'noise' trouble myself trying to record directly to my computer (either via USB or the mic socket) - these days I tend to record to a portable field recorder instead, then copy the resulting files to my computer, but I realise that wouldn't be nearly as convenient as direct ADR to the Vegas timeline.

Well, in the end the problem was the audio device was defaulting to the laptop's built-in mic instead of the mixer unit. So, a slight oversight on my part, but I'll also take this opportunity to lay some blame at Microsoft for Vista.

Ah, yes I've been fooled that way too :)

Vista sucks, I'd recommend a Windows 7 upgrade if you can afford it and your computer can cope. (As far as I know, Windows 7 will happily run Vegas 8, although I'd recommend a bit or research on that.)
