Am i doing something wrong? I have a dell XPS M1330 laptop, it has a 512mb graphics card, 2.0 ghz core 2 duo processor and 2 gb ram, but it just keeps struggling.

Its getting really frusterating.

I do color correction on my clips, and a few different sound lines, but still its only 10 mins of footage.

is this typical?

Im outputting to 720p, 24 fps

What kind of files are you starting with? And yes, 4.5 hours to render 10 minutes with your level of machine is certainly nothing to be alarmed about. Rendering a feature on machines MUCH faster than yours takes DAYS. I've certainly done my share of 24-48 hour renders. Got one coming this week in fact for an hour and 10 minute program.

I've just completed a nice fast quad core build, and a 2 hour 15 minute sequence with some titles, supers and cross fades only - and it took 28 hours to render, shrinking HD down to SD at the same time. I'm currently doing another with the programme split into two halves, with one running on each machine. (this is on Adobe - so not just a Sony thing). Rendering where any number crunching has to take place is just something we live with, I guess.

ahhh, ok well i dont feel so bad now. Thanks for the info guys.

Sad thing is i just viewed my footage for my short film that screens tonight and i really didnt like some of the color correction that i did in one scene when viewing it on another screen (looked fine on mylaptop?)

I changed it and im trying to re-render and its been going for an hour, and still has 4.5 hours left and i have to be ready in like 4 hours.

:(

oh well, ill just have to screen it as is.

Do you use free Magic Bullet stuff that comes with Vegas? It is DOG SLOW.

Rendering from AVCHD with simple effects (levels, colors, dissolves, text) takes about 8x of realtime on my machine, that means, about 80 minutes for a 10-minute video. I have a 4-core AMD machine, but the CPU speed is not particularly high, 2.4GHz, I believe.

If you are using your laptop to judge your colors, you are headed for disappointment time and again.

i just realized this now. FML :(

Yeah im using some basic magic bullet stuff (i think its actually a really old version)

My files were all shot with a D90 (avi i think), and my rendered files are .wmv (i tried to go to avi, but it didnt seem to make any difference)
