Vegas 9 Render won't show video on WMP

Has anyone had a problem viewing the video of a rendered MPEG2 file from Vegas 9?

I rendered for the first time today after loading Vegas 9 on my computer(about 3 weeks ago) - When Window Media Player comes up, it plays the audio, but the video is black.

If I open an MPEG2 that I had rendered with Vegas 8, It plays fine.

I tried opening the new Vegas9 rendered MPEG2 on an old laptop of mine and it played just fine. My computer is much more powerful than that little old laptop, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Again, I've never had this problem before but have it now. I"m assuming it has something to do with Vegas 9. It's Vegas 9.2 by the way.

Anyone heard of this before?

Thanks

are you by any chance missing a codec required? is there any error that pops up when you try to play it?

It could be a codec issue I guess, but i have no idea how to correct it.

The Rendered file works fine if i pull it into a vegas timeline and view it. Anything I previously rendered can be viewed on WMP, just fine, but anything new I render, is no video, just audio.

I cant figure it out. As I said, this computer is much more powerful than the old one that i can view them on. - The problems started happening after installing Vegas 9.

Any ideas?

Yep,

When you render to WMV in Vegas 9, you have several options for which codec is used. Which one was used? And have you upgraded your Windows Media Player recently?

I render as an MPEG2. When I click on the rendered file, my default is Window Media Player. It opens up, but only plays the audio.

It does appear I have the latest version of WMP. My Windows updates everything automatically.

I can't figure it outl

I highlighted your answer. Unless you have the same codec and it's available to Windows media player, you can't read mpeg2. Why are you using Mpeg2 anyway? Unless you're going to DVD this is a terrible choice for a finishing codec.

Windows doesn't come with a MPEG2 directshow decoder. WMP relies on directshow for decoding

You can install a 3rd party directshow decoder e.g. ffdshow (and enable MPEG2 in the configuration)

or use a player that has inclusive codecs, like VLC, or SMPlayer

I'm using MPEG 2 because the quality on MPEG 1 is pretty bad. It's what I normally use. I've used it many times in the past and never had a problem with playback on WMP. It's only been the past month or so that this issue has suddenly appeared.

The native codec for Windows Media player is Windows Media. And it's a codec FAR superior to Mpeg2. You are causing your own problems here. So use Mpeg4 (h.264) or WMV (Windows Media Video) and you're problems will be solved. And your encodes will look better.

I did a professional WMV encode for a producer 2 days ago. His jaw dropped when he saw the quality of his movie. This was for submission to a festival.

You'll note that practically every Hollywood studio is releasing BluRays encoded with either mpeg4 or WMV (aka VC-1). No one is using Mpeg2 any more except for DVD work.

i must be missing something all together because when I click Render as, I don't get an Mpeg4 option. I have a .wmv option, but as far as mpegs go, MPEG1 and MPEG2 are my choices.

Do you have a Sony AVC? Are you using Pro or one of the consumer Vegas programs? I think there are some codecs in the Pro version that the other one's don't have. No matter. If you are staying on the PC WMV is an excellent codec.

I don't have any additional advanced video coding software.

I use the latest version of Sony Vegas PRO 9
