Vegas 9 Platinum: Creating Timelapses

So, I've got a bunch of 60p shots that, in retrospect, I want to make timelapses from, with one-second intervals.

Unfortunately, though, Platinum doesn't seem to let you export as an image sequence, nor does it let you speed up a clip more than 4x. Is there any way to go about doing this that doesn't involve either manually saving images or making multiple renders?

Assuming Movie Studio has velocity envelopes (which I don't know for sure to be the case), you can use them with your playback rate to get a speed-up of up to 12x.

But that's the best you're going to do.

Nope, no velocity envelopes. Guess I'll just have to deal with it, do the math, and render it however many times I need to.

When you say “60p shots”, you mean you have a video clip at 60 FPS and you want to slow that down to 1 FPS? I guess what’s confusing is time-lapses usually mean speeding things up, like taking 30 minutes and turning it into a 20 second clip, not slowing things down.

Like you said Vegas Platinum you can only speed-up/slow-down 4x. So yes you would have to do this in several renders: :(.

But what I wanted to say was something I recently discovered when trying to make my own time lapse from a GoPro hd, set for one picture every 2 seconds. I took about 1000 pictures and wanted to convert this into a 30 second clip.

Well the default setting in Vegas for pictures is 2 or 3 seconds. This is way too long for a time lapse and manually shortening all 1000 photos in the time-line was something I was NOT looking forward to.

What I discovered was in the options (I’ll post the exact location when I get home) you can set the default setting for how long an image should last. I believe I changed it to .025 seconds. Then I selected all 1000 pictures, dragged them into the timeline and presto! I even found out you can even pan and crop before rendering. I was very impressed how good the clip came out.

Anyway this probably does not help your particular situation but maybe others trying to do time-lapse will find this useful.

Another option (at least in Vegas Pro) is to open the images as a sequence. Make sure all the images are in the same folder. File-Open, navigate to the image folder and select the first image. A checkbox will appear that says something like "Image Sequence," if you check it it will import all the images in that sequence at (I believe) one image per frame for a progressive project. I'm not sure how the images get split on an interlaced project, but you can play with it easily enough.
