Vegas 9 and RED r3d files

Strange things going on here...

In Vegas Pro 9, if I click on the top "Play" button to play the r3d media in Vegas Pro 9 explore window, the videos play back fine. (of course under auto preview quality).

If I drag the r3d file onto the timeline (without any effects or transitions) it stutters under the auto preview setting.

It "may" be an issue for all video files, but shows up more due to the demanding data rate of RED r3d files.

I'm very puzzled why the top preview plays smooth (same preview setting, size etc..) , but drops to 10fps or so and stuttters.

I'm using a fast NVIDIA 1GB Video card and also ran a drive speed test which is capable of sustaining 68MB/s.

Are you sure you don't have any effects or anything applied to the track or to the preview window? Is the footage on top of other footage?

Thanks David..

No effects at all.

Started a new project and placed one 3d file on the timeline.

It's odd..

I've tried everything I can think of including starting a new project several times.

My EX1 footage plays OK on the timeline under the preview (auto setting), but does seem to be close to its limit.
I'm going to have to fire up Vegas 8.0c and compare how well the EX1 footage previews compared to Vegas 9.

For anyone who wants to try this themselves, r3d files can be downloaded from here:

The site is down right now :(
Will try as soon as it's back up.
If you know of any other sources let me know.

What processor are you running, which video card, OS, mem?
If I get a file I'll try it on my test system. It's a Core2 Duo OCed to 3.6GHz, 2GB 6400 ram, ATI HD4550 w/512MB (only cause that's the fastest fanless vid card I can find), dual boot running XP 32bit and Windows7 32bit
