Vegas 8 - worth it?

I have a few questions. I was reccomended Vegas Pro on here a while back, but I've been reading it crashes extremely often. I was reccomended it because I don't have a mac, and I need something that will run on my Toshiba laptop, and work well with my DVX 100a. Is Vegas Pro 8 really worth it? It sounded so conveniant at first but now I'm not so sure. I really want a program with good color correction, and from what I've heard, the Vegas versions before 8 don't have very good color correction.

Vegas 9 ships in 3 weeks. It has some very nice upgrades and is supposedly more stable. With that said, I run Vegas 8.1 on my laptop, and 8.0c elsewhere. I rarely have issues. And by rarely, I mean that since 8.0 shipped I can count my crashes on one hand.

Many people use various plug-ins, and all manner of things and seem to have more trouble.

With DV, you're not going to have any problems. It's still the most solid choice when using the DVX.

It's just the wide cocktail of competing and sometimes conflicting codecs which are out there now, especially in the HD world, which may give it problems, especially when it requires plugins to use them. And, frankly, it's probably still more stable than most anything else. The complaining about its stability is mostly coming from people who are used to how bulletproof it was in earlier versions. It never crashed. So a few crashes a year now seem like a lot. :)

That said, 9 is out in a few weeks. Given the choice between the two, I'd hold out.

The only time I had crash issues with Vegas 8 was when I was working with AVCHD from my 150 and that was only after I add effects and tiff photos.

One thing I'll say is this coming from Adobe CS3.....
Vegas is far less a pain in my butt next to Premiere CS3 was buggy and would crash and freeze even when working with "simple projects" from time to time.

If you are going to go with Vegas I would get the free 30 day download of Vegas 8 and then look into buying Vegas 9 Pro if 8 is up to your standards.

5/11/09.

Perfect. Then I'll get the trial in the next few weeks, and wait to see how VP 9 turns out. I'll post other questions if I think of any. Thanks.

Is it hard to edit 30p in Vegas? Is it possible to edit 24p, 30p, and 60i all on the same timeline?

To provide more detail . . . :)

Editing 30p is exactly like editing 60i.

If you're planning to mix 24p, 30p, and 60i all on the same timeline, then there are two things you must do:

1) Plan to edit on a 60i (NTSC DV, which 29.97 interlaced) timeline.

2) Shoot 24p standard, NOT 24pA.

This is true of any editing system.

You should not ever try to edit 30p on a 24p timeline, or 24p on a 30p timeline. Vegas will LET you, but the results will not be good. This, too, is true of any editing system.

Of course, there is no DV 30p preset, so unless you create a 30p timeline yourself, one of those probably won't be much of a worry.

Yes.

Well, unless you want to do it as slo-mo. If you're shooting the 60i or 30p for the purposes of 24p slo-mo, then it all changes.

Yes vegas 8 is worth it..Just like someone said its the next big thing as more younger users might prefer it to other NLE's

I hoped that once. And it should have been. But unless the route Sony is taking with it changes, not gonna happen.

guess we'll have to wait and see what they have in store for us in 9..Just hope it'l be worth the wait coz 8 has had its share of problems! But its still a lovely NLE
