Vegas 8, render time impressive

So I downloaded the trial last night and have been running a few tests. First thing I though I would try out is render times. I opened the same project in both Vegas 7.0e and Vegas Pro 8. First I rendered the 30 second commercial in Pro 8 with a render time of 3:20 sec. I then rendered it in Vegas 7 with a render time of 4:37 seconds. This project includes motion graphics, color correction and compositing so I felt it would be a good trial. Not too shabby. Incidently this is HD footage rendered out as DV-NTSC 24P inserting 2:3 pulldown.

One issue that I did encounter, I cannot properly capture HDV (not a big issue as I use cineform) but something that I thought was rather weird, as 7 has never had that issue. It basically would capture a clip in a series of very small half second clips (with scene detection turned off even). NOt sure what's up with that.

Pro titler = very cool, although I still have to learn how to use it.

And with the upgrade only costing $139, you really can't go wrong.

Where did you find the upgrade for $139? When I go to the site it looks like the upgrade from any version of Vegas is $249.95.

Holy cow . . . it's early; I haven't really sussed it out yet . . .

But the 32-bit floating point color sure is a kick in the pants. Others are complaining about it, because they say it makes their footage too dark, but if a film-like color grading is what you're after, jeez. VERY nice.

I've installed Vegas 8 and am testing against some existing projects. You can change the pixel format on the Video Tab of the Project Properties. The options are 8-bit or 32-bit floating point. A lot of stuff that I had already color corrected was coming out real dark, almost black when using 32-bit. I'm going to try to re-correct some clips with the 32-bit setting and see what happens.

The 32-bit pixel format might be better used on new projects.

OK. I've worked with the 8-bit / 32-bit setting a little more and the 32-bit setting seems to give you a lot more control over color correcting. I'm using Color Curves and the difference is dramatic! If I switch between 8-bit and 32-bit. The 8-bit corrected colors can look pretty muddy real quick. But the 32-bit pixel format provides some real nice control and fine tuning.

My link came from Sony this ayem. That's a great deal for anyone already using Vegas at the "Pro" tier of products.

Ah, yes...I just had not waited long enough to get the e-mail offer from Sony. Got it now and it's on order. Can't wait :)

I rendered the same file(mpeg 2) in 8 and 7 8=5:29 7=5:39 I'm not impressed at all with 8 so far as preview window and rendering.. Also the preview window actually slows down to 2 fps in 8 vs. 3.5 fps in 7 using best full..

maybe i have a setting wrong or something??

That's what happened to me when I went from 6 to 7, it doesn't look like I'll be upgrading any time soon.

That seems really odd to me as my experience has gone exactly the opposite direction. I now get full resolution playback at full speed of 1080 24p HDV at the Good setting, before I could only get half resolution at preview setting to play back full speed, and even then with HDV it was very iffy. Render times have drastically improved (Vegas seems to use both cores of my CPU in places where it only used a cingle core in V7.) Not saying your not having problems, god knows I've gone through the same thing in the past and it is not fun. Now I have the dillema of what to do with cineform.
In the past cineform has been my goto codec because of it's fast performance, well now standard HDV plays back much faster and even renders faster than cineform. Any updates on the cineform front to combat this?

Well, thanks to you scoundrels, I ordered my upgrade today. I am in the midst of a project and will try to finish it in 8 and see how it goes. I am currently running on 6.0d, so this should be a nice jump.

No way!!! It IS faster? Has anyone try this without the fancier stuff meaning a project with only CC on it?

Has anyone tested for performance increases in preview framerates?

I was getting 18fps on full playback at best settings before with 24f HDV footage. I now get 23.96 (full framerate).

That is without any CC at all.
