Vegas 8 pro & RED?

I have been researching whether one can edit RED footage in Vegas. I have seen some threads but they're mostly from 2007 (at reduser.net). I'm wondering if there is any work around this issue. I have a friend who wants to shoot my script with his RED and I would love to edit with Vegas, of course. Is this a No-go?

Currently a no-go. Sort of.

Someday Red will release an SDK to outside developers, and CineForm is anticipated to quickly turn that into an operational plug-in for Windows program support, and CineForm has a longstanding relationship with Vegas, so you can expect that there will be a CineForm option for Vegas to edit Red footage, probably in June or July.

Now, with that said -- you CAN edit Red footage in Vegas right now, but it's a torturously phenomenally painfully slow process. You'd process all your Red footage through RedCine, exporting editable footage files. You could actually export full-res 4K stills as a sequence, and then import those into Vegas, but it would be so slow as to be unusable.

You could export standard-def files from RedCine and edit those in realtime, but then you'll have to go in and do a conform process; not quite sure how the EDL support would work with that.

Thanks for clearing this. The project won't be done until late Summer so I may have to keep my fingers crossed.

I wonder if having After Effects helps in any way.

Hi Barry > But will vegas accept 4k still sequences ? Will it play them without stuttering ? Even if it can the max output from vegas can be only 2048 wide right ?

I don't think anything can take a 4K still sequence and play it without stuttering. You're talking about 366 megabytes per second of data...

Vegas 8 only supports up to 2048 x 2048.

Yeah, if RED gets their act together and include Cineform or whatever other good-enough lossless intermediate codec, we could import with their tool, export to 2k or 1080p lossless with their tool, and then edit in Vegas. That workflow would work with me, I don't need more than 1080p anyway. But for now they seem very sold to FCP and they do close business with Apple.

There will be an announcement in June for full native support for Red on PC from a small list of companies, including Adobe. I believe Cineform is part of the list as well.

After Effects will take a range of files from Redcine. I've been doing a lot of compositing work from Red shooting greenscreen on the PC from the very beginning without any problems. Red is the best camera for generating keys that I've ever used.

A bit of patience and time will see support issues addressed. Red still hasn't even delivered cameras yet to all its customers. There are some lenses and accessories that will be a while coming yet as well. Red is fresh out of the gate and their plans are very aggressive.

THANKS for the tip! Looking forward to this then.
