Vegas 7 wierd pixelation fields

Ok so I'm really new at this site....I just bought a Panasonic DVX100b for christmas asnd started to film my short movie...I captured and everything seemed to work fine until I noticed in a couple of shots that there seems to be many vertical pixelated lines that do not move but can be seen when the subjects etc move. The most noticeable is when we had a chracter in red against a black backdrop...the out line doesnt look to be blurred to the background...what is this?...I noticed that this pixelation problem happened with other cameras that I have used in vegas - I know its not the camera because on the view finder this wierd field pixelation blur thing is missing - and when I hook the camera up to a TV to preview it, the lines are gon...Its weird that the pixelation is there in the preiveiw monitor for capture...and sometimes in the timeline...I noticed it was once in the capture preview but then not in the timeline preview???...can someone seriously help me...I'am at my witts end with this..and really need help thanks!!!

P.S. I used the chroma blur effect in vegas for the parts that needed it to be fixed and it fixed the problem....but I still want to figure out why this is doing it???

thanks for the link very helpful, being color blind, i like to get as much information about color as possible

video is quite different than web design though, and its not all about numbers.

Thanks for the info - - but how come the footage displays fine on a TV or on the DVX100 LCD screen?...is there something to fix during capture or editing??? thanks

It's because the computer screen is capable of displaying both progressively and in far greater detail than either the LCD or a TV screen.

So .....is this an interlaced problem?..because after reading some of the other comments I'm getting the feel that this is an interlaced situation....Just curious because I filmed with the Panasonic DVX100b....and was wondering if I maybe messeb some of the settings or something...cause I captured in 29.97 like you said (David J.) in you tutorial...and captured in Widescreen ...but then when I dropped the clips into Vegas...I had to right click in the properties and turn them into Widescreen, I know this probably has no effect on the color sampling...but was just curious???

Show us a screen shot, but most likely it is not an interlace problem, it's exactly what the other guys have said: low color sampling which is inherent in the DV format.

I just became a new user....so I cant upload any pictures...but is there an email that I can send it to?...

Ok well I guess that was my 5 posts so heres the pics....the first is a pic with the vegas blurred tool

This second pic is the same without the blur

This next pic is one that my friend made with some animation program and used very high resloution quality i clipped the rest of the image out so that the part with the weird pixelled look can be seen

thanks for the help and comments

The guy from Vegas Software told me Vegas picks up 23.976 fps and if u store the image as .AVI Vegas captures 24pA.

Did you use an anamaphoric lens to get the widescreen, or did u uprez 4:3 letter box to 16:9 widescreen in Vegas?

I might get Vegas 7 + DVD sometime this week...

No I dont have the anamorphic lens....I used the letterbox setting on the DVX....I captured just normal 24p....but would that make a difference to the reds?

The first example with the red shirt -- that's exactly what DV chroma sampling will do to you.

The second example looks more like a bad JPG compression artifact. Your raw footage shouldn't normally look like that.

I usually shoots with chroma -2 to get down the red, and then do a chroma blur and after bring in more red. But if the end media is dvd it doesnt matter that much.

Half that.

I don't know that I get half that. I don't know that I haven't filmed anything with red that didn't have blocking in it, etc. Christmas is the worst for filming :)

I filmed a maroon colored car and even noticed it.

I bought my DVX100b last week, and shot for these grabs on two separate occasions. Shot 24Pa - Now I've captured my footage in Vegas 7 - and I am experiancing the same thing.

Well, check these out:

www.miranga.com/grab3.bmp

I Copied the snapshot to clipboard, pasted into photoshop, isolated the problem area - and export to BMP - so it should not have any jpg compression issues. But it shows the same thing... The last shot was with the option to view the red channel as grey - it really shows up then!

My scene file settings at the time were chroma at -2, ped at -4, iris -3 , gamma - cine v, matix - cinelike, skin tone - off, v detail - thin.

I've since turned my chroma setting down to -7 : but I've tested draping a bright red shirt on a chair, and its not quite as bad... but its still noticible now that I am looking for it.

This is the first time that I've captured via 'software' with Vegas - I have a Matrox RT2500, but didnt use it to capture footage from the DVX yet - and matrox does have some measure of chroma blur - but my VX2000 never had issues with Red that strongly. I am going to be putting the rt2500 back in to perform more tests.

Playing the same footage from the camera via analogue to TV does not display the obvious squares, but only a slight chroma shift. Which is to be expected, its only once its captured (so far) that it does this.

I will be testing 60i, and default settings for the scene file etc... because I definitly want to figure out how to minize this!
