Vegas 7 - Making Media Offline

I am somewhat new to Vegas, and I have a really simple question about media management in Vegas 7.0d.

When I'm done working with a project, is there some way to make the footage offline without also deleting the Clips in the Project Media tab? It makes me queasy to see that Vegas actually deletes the Clips in the Project Media tab. I would much, much rather leave that "empty shell" of the footage I worked with, along with all their vital info - timecodes, tape names, etc.

Basically is there no way to simply leave offline clips in the project?????

I've tried deleting the underlying file in Windows Explorer, and Vegas greys out the clip in the Project Media tab. This is a step in the right direction, but it's very cumbersome. Furthermore the greyed out clip in the Project Media tab has lost all its info (timecode, tapename, etc). This is downright terrifying, no?

Also:
When I right click a greyed out clip in the Project Manager, "Recapture" is also greyed out. (I captured with the included Vegas HDV capture utility, using Scene Detect, and now I don't have my HDV camera hooked up. Is that why the "Recapture" command is greyed out?)

Anyone? I really need to figure this out.

I tried connecting my Canon A1, and right click an offline clip in the Project Media tab. "Recapture" is still greyed out! "Recapture All Offline Media" is selectable, but when I click it nothing happens. (And there's nothing wrong with my firewire connection.)

So when I open the Capture utility in Vegas, the Clip Log shows me a list of all the clips, including those that are offline. However there is apparently no timecode info associated with each clip. And when I right click a clip in the Clip Log, and select "Capture -> Capture All Clips, Capture Selected Clips, Capture Offline Clips" are all greyed out too.

What is going on in Vegas 7.0d?????? To me it's an *absolutely worthless program* if I can't:

1. Capture a clip
2. Take that clip offline
3. Recapture the clip according to its original timecode.

Please tell me I'm doing something wrong. Every NLE I have used can do this, not Vegas???

btw I do not have Media Manager installed, could this be the problem?

DV Recapture works, HDV recapture doesn't???

DV Recapture works, HDV recapture doesn't???

Ok, so I tried capturing DV footage, and Vegas behaves like I think it should. Recapture options are selectable. I delete a clip, reconect it just fine. Everything behaving nicely.

But apparently NOT for the HDV capture utility in Vegas?!?!

No responses? No solutions?

The apparent inability to recapture HDV footage in Vegas would appear to be a huge, dealbreaking problem that people should know about.
