Vegas 5 with 2 monitors or 1 HDTV is it possible

I apologize if this is somewhat off topic for this forum, but I did not see any other more appropriate option on this site.

I am in the process of purchasing a new workstation, but I need some suggestions as to a good monitor.

The graphics card I will probably get is the PNY Quadro FX1300 PCIe 128mb which supports dual monitors.

Question #1:
Since I will be buying two monitors I would like to keep the cost as low as possible but yet still get a good monitor. I am probably looking at a minimum of 19” but better yet 21” monitors. Any suggestions as to a quality monitor without the quality price, and a good place to buy it?

Question #2:
(a) Is it at all possible to use one of the new HDTVs in place of the two monitors? A 30” HDTV might only cost a bit more than 2 good 21” monitors? Is this a feasible idea?

(b) Assuming only one 30” HDTV, could I use such an arrangement as effectively as two monitors?

(c) If this is possible is there a special video card I should get in place of the Quadro FX1300?

(d) Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dan

Q.1  How much desk space do you have?  I personally still prefere CRT's for all my work, but they take up a lot of space, but also cost much less.  A good CRT at 19" can run anywhere from $300-$500 ea, whereas a good LCD at 19" will start at about $800 each.

Yes you could use an HDTV as your monitor.

Yes and no.  Unless you get a really high resolution HDTV you are going to be looking at 1280x720 for you monitor.  While this isn't bad, my laptop is 1280x800, it will not give you the screen space as too good 1640 monitors, or even two 1280x1024 monitors.

Why are you getting the Quadro FX1300? are you doing a lot of 3D work?  if not, any standard video card would be adequate with either 2 CRT's/LCD's or an HDTV.

Yes. I keep my monitors and a combined 2560x1024 and that gives me a lot more room than 1280x720 would . . . and I wish I still had a little more.

I do not have a lot of desk space so I thought that a large flat panel would be beeter than two smaller monitors.

What size flat panel monitor would I have to get in order to have the equivalent screen space of, say, 2 17" monitors?

Can you recommend a flat panel brand/model, or perhaps the minimum specs for which I should be looking?

Thanks again.

You can't. Flat-panel HDs never (unless I've missed one, and you'll be paying out the nose if there is one) have a vertical resolution of more than 768. Even a 17" monitor will get you to at least 960.

That's true david, I never even thought about that. Can't say I've seen a flat panel larger than 768 either.

I'm not cetrain exactly how this all fits in, but the SAMSUNG, SYNCMASTER 243T 24" has the specification: Max/Native Resolution: 1920x1200.

If I am understanding this correctly, might this be an acceptable alternative to two monitor? Again, I need to use flat panel monitors due to space limitations.

FYI here are a few more of the specs. OC World gives it a 4 star rating, second only to the Apple 23-Inch Cinema HD Display for graphiics.

Re: Vegas 5 with 2 monitors or 1 HDTV is it possib

1920x1200 is still only 1.6:1 in ratio.  A single 4:3 monitor is 1.33:1.  A pair of 4:3 monitors is 2.66 to 1.  And at 1920x1200, the picture will be distorted.

Ideally, what I like to have is the main window of Vegas, including the timeline, the preview window (at full resolution), and a third tool (often the scopes) in my left monitor, and all the other tool windows laid out in the right monitor.  That's lots of screen space, and you've have to compromise considerably to get everything laid out even on a screen at 1600x1200 or 1920x1200.

Thanks, Dave (and others)

Am I corret that you are using CRT monitors?

If not, and you are using flat panel (again, the only thing I have room for) what make and model are they.

Thanks,

Dan

Samsung CRT.

Yes, I agree the Samsung is good. I own a 955df black and a Viewsonic E90fb. The blacks are blacker on the Viewsonic but the overall picture is better on the Samsung. Unfortunately it is very hard to find a black 955df but the beige ones might still be available. Plus it is relatively inexpensive.
