Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Well I have premiere 6.5, my computer can't handle pro and I have Vegas 5.

I shot this short film in the 24pa with a 16:9 adapter on the DVX100a camera but my option is not to go for film transfer but to make dvds.

Now since , 6.5 does not natively support automatic pulldown on 24P Adv. I would need DVfilmmaker so that it can run through a file and turn it into a "True" 24 fps file, allowing you to edit it in any NLE that supports 24 frames per second. But I don't want to spend more money.

Now from the searches I did on here it sounds like Vegas supports everything .. so I can go straight to capturing.
Is this correct?

The other thing I heard is that when I do my capturing I don't need to do any presets. Just leave it and capture, I believe the setting is set to 29.97 on Vegas when it captures. Now do I leave that as it is.. Or should I change that to 23.97 before capturing. Or I do the setting to 23.97 once I captured everything and I'm ready to edit. Is this correct?

And another thing, not sure if it matters, I'm doing my capturing from my little sony cam, and not the dvx since I rented that for the shoot.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

By all means, use Vegas 5 for everything. When capturing, Vegas doesn't remove pulldown, it captures the entire file intact (which is the right way to do it; it means you can use the file in a 24P project OR in a 60i/29.97 project!)

When you go to edit, you select either a 24P or a 60i project preset. Vegas will automatically remove pulldown for the 24P project, or automatically insert it for the 60i project. The same file will work in both. You don't have to make any changes to any settings when capturing.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Okay, so just click capture and ok, don't worry about any settings.

Nice and simple.

Thanks Barry!

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Vegas default settings are optimal out of the gate. You shouldn't worry about changing them unless you really know what you're doing or if you're purposely experimenting.

Okay... but I need to change the settings when I start to edit to have a short film 24 frames per second on a dvd.

Also, how do you guys save your footage when you capture.
Do you capture the whole tape and save it.

or When you capture you save each scene, each take, when the slate goes click as different names.. ex. scene 2 take 3 - master shot.

That's what I'm doing. Want to hear from you guys.

Why?  Is it too long for a DVD-5?

That kind of comes down to preference.  You can get yourself most of the way there with a little discpline in production -- ALWAYS stop tape after a take and then start to roll only after the slate is in front of the camera.  That way, each take should save in its own clip if you just capture the whole tape.

Of course, that doesn't help with the naming, but as you'll be able to see the slate in each clip's thumbnail, you probably don't need to worry about that so much.

True, but a lot of the times, we just kept rolling, heck it's video not film, that's why I love it. We got tons of footage for out takes, and some extra stuff for the dvd extras by letting the tapes just record, once in awhile.

I'm not familiar with DVD-5? But all I Know is I want the video to look film like, I shot it on the 24a mode, and I want to make the dvds like that. 24 frames per second, I mean isn't this what everyone does and how movies are made.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

You don't have to change any settings for a 24p DVD. Download the Whitepaper from the Sony site for detailed instructions:

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/support/productinfo/24p.pdf

Like I said, the style of capture is personal preference.

You can still do all that, though, and have clean slate clips if you just stop the camera before you slate, then start it again once the slate is there. Whatever happens after "cut" is called is up to you; all you have to do is worry about what to do right before the take.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

However, I must point out that 24p footage retains its film look no matter if it's 60i or true 24p.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Sweet, thanks for that link David.

What is the difference between the Capture Video and Capture Tape, which to click?

well I tried both and they were both capturing just wondering if there is a difference between them.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Capture Video will start capturing wherever you are on the tape.

Capture Tape will rewind the tape and capture all of it.

(Capture Video will too, if you start at the beginning of the tape. However, CV will continue capturing after the tape has stopped, giving you a clip a long stretch of silent black nothing.)

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Thanks,

Now I've done all my capturing. All the clips are on Vegas. Do I need to do anything with the capturing before I start to edit. I know it final cut you had to capture it and do something with it before editing.

Okay, now I switch the setting to 23.97 in the working properties new project and I'm ready to go. Vegas will remove pulldown automatically?

When I add a clip onto the timeline for example, the I want to add another one, but I want to Cut from a moment from the first clip to another moment from the second clip. Not the whole thing obviously.. you know cutting. I have spend hours trying to figure it out. Any help greatly appriciated.

Re: Cutting...

Re: Cutting...

Place the cursor where you want to apply a "cut" (split in Vegas lingo) and press the "s" key ("s" for split) and volià...

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

You don't need to do anything else. Just drop the clips into the 24p project, and pulldown will be removed automatically.

You can use the "s" split as paul said, or you can move the ends of the clips to the desired points.

Or, you can open the original clips in the Trimmer Tool and only move what you want onto the timeline.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Thanks you guys.

The thing about the pulldown and 24p matter when I drop the clips in the timeline it still says 29.97. Unless I go and switch the setting in the properties.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

What still says 29.97 and what properties are you changing?

Are you just talking about the timeline ruler? For some reason, that doesn’t switch automatically in V5. Why? I don’t know.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Ya, when I put a clip on the timeline and a press play, the preview screen, says :

Project: (inblack) 720X480X32, 29.97Oi
Preview: (inred) 360X240X32, 29.97Op

I can switch this by going to File, properties, Template:- 23.97 fps Widescreen or standard, also in Frame rate section.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Well, it looks to me that you had a 29.97 project initially, so no, pulldown would not be removed. Only in a 24p project.

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

I don't get it...

I shot 24pa on the dvxa100 with the 16:9 adapter.

how do I have 29.97?

Re: Vegas 5... I'm doing this right?

Because it’s recorded to tape in 60i (which is 29.97 fps). That’s what pulldown is for – to convert the 24p to 60i. A 24p project will remove the pulldown and extract the true 24p frames.

It has to be this way because DV is a 60i-exclusive spec. I know there’s a lot of confusion and a HUGE myth pepetuated that 24pA records to tape in progressive frames, but it does not.
