Vegas 5+DVD Architect vs. FCP HD and DVDSP 2

I have been using Final Cut Express for a year. I have FCP HD but have not yet installed. I also have a PC and would like to know some pros and cons from anyone that has used both FCP HD and Vegas 5. Any thoughts.

Thanks,

Steve

It comes down to personal preference. I suggest you download the demo and try it for yourself. No one can make that determination for you.

Though I would say that you'll have an easier time transitioning to FCP if you’ve worked in FCE. Same workspace, and you can transfer your projects seamlessly. Vegas’s workflow and interface are markedly different and a lot of Final Cut users go into apoplexy when they try to switch to Vegas.

But like I said, only you can make that determination.

David,

I'm not looking to switch to Vegas 5 from FCE/FCP, I just want to learn a Windows NLE. I figure it comes down to Avid, Vegas or one of Pinnacle's. It seems a lot of people like Vegas so that's why I was asking.

As for my tastes. I left behind PC's three years ago and I couldn't be happier. I still have my Dell, and thought about putting it to use by learning another NLE.

Is Vegas a good choice.

Generally speaking, Vegas is a GREAT choice, period. But what is your purpose for learning a PC NLE? That can affect your choice.

But I still recommend downloading the demo.

For no other reason than just to learn something new. Also use it as a backup in case my Mac goes down.

I will take you up on that and try the demo. Who knows, I may hate it, or, like it better than FCE/FCP.

I really just want to get a different perspective on how another NLE works. I tried iMovie when I bought my Mac and just didn't take to it. I then bought FCE and was hooked.

I would recommend Vegas. Why? It's not only a solid program* that does what you want without hassle, but it will work on 3 year old Windows-based hardware. Vegas does not demand you to buy a new computer with every upgrade. Check the system specs on the Sony website. A firewire card is all you need to start editing.
Try the demo-version to have a good look at it, although not all functions will work in it.

* In my opinion Vegas rocks because of it's smart software architecture, it's superiour audio tools (no other Windows based NLE will offer you something you can compare), the 5.1 surround audio mixing ánd Dolby Digital encoding, it won't crash when you do demanding tasks, etc. I switched from Premiere 6.5 with a Matrox RTX10 realtime card to Vegas, when Vegas 4 came out. I never touched my old software/Matrox hardware since then....
