I'm trying to buy a licensed copy of vegas 5. the seller isn't sure if it's bundled with cineform. this guy sells lots of software apparently. question: do all versions of vegas 5 come with cineform?

Also I don’t think Vegas 5 comes with any way to actually capture HDV. If you read the Release Notes for Vegas 5.0d (the last patch) it says:

To capture and print HDV video, use the CineForm ConnectHD tool, which you can download from our Web site.

So even if it comes with the Cineform codec, you have no way to capture HDV with Vegas 5. (The HDV capture tool did not get added until Vegas 6). Your best bet would just be to buy Cineform Connect HD anyway. It has so many other useful options you’ll be glad you did.

Vegas 5 & 6 both come with a codec license to CineForm Intermediate. However Vegas does not include any of the conversion utilities that enhances the workflow for Vegas (for users of HDV and P2 cameras.) That product is Connect HD, read more here http://www.cineform.com/products/ConnectHD.htm

I'm confused, with vegas 5 you get the codec but not the software application (connect hd) to capture hdv? So in other words, I'd still have to buy connect hd if I want to capture hdv footage in vegas 5?

If this is the case, why did cineform give just the codec in vegas 5? it is useless without connect hd. I don't get it.

Brian,

We didn't give the codec to Sony, Sony paid a license. My understanding was that Vegas 5.0d did have some HDV capture ability, yet conversion to CineForm AVI was still a manual process. Most Vegas HDV users opt. for Connect HD.

Okay so if I buy vegas 5 and want to capture hdv I still need to buy connect hd?
Or is it only necessary to have the codec which sony includes in vegas?

Yes. I just checked on my copy of Vegas 5 and when I select capture, it only displays the DV Capture utility. There is no HDV capture in Vegas 5. HDV capture was introduced in Vegas 6. I have Vegas 6 and I still own Connect HD because it’s an outstanding productivity tool for working in HDV. In addition to capturing direct to Cineform which Vegas 6 doesn’t do it can deinterlace while capturing, remove 3-2 pulldown, and splits clips with scene detection (something else Vegas 6 can’t do). IMHO, it really is worth buying if you’re working in HD.
