vegas 5 and after effects....

Hey everyone, I love this forum and would appreciate any comments and discussion you would have on the advantages/disadvantages of using Vegas 5 and AE together...
I currently use Vegas 5 and just recieved AE 5.5 production bundle from a friend. As I work through the program from a "how-to" book and feel around a bit on my own, I am wondering if AE can really do a better job in general for all sorts of special fx, compositing, track motion, and 3d then Vegas. I use multiple layer projects from Photoshop often and will likely need animation and sound added to these at some point. Audio is of major importance as well, as I do extensive audio work currently in vegas with multiple fx and tracks. I know AE is a great program often used by hollywood with much success (i.e. I just saw The Butterfly Effect --very cool), that's why I originally desired to learn it, but after feeling around a bit I am now beginning to wonder how far it's capabilities extend beyond vegas 5. My projects are vast in general, so my capabilities should be as well, I wonder if AE could be of more hassle than what it's worth (learning curve and import/exporting files all the time). I would apreciate any discussion and hearing your guy's thoughts and experiences on the topic of using these two great programs together (while still using photoshop) and if it is really advantageous.

Thanks for all your help,

Kevin :D

Re: vegas 5 and after effects....

I don't think it's a waste to learn AE by any means. Vegas is a great compositor however it is not AE. General layering and some great graphics control plus nesting tracks allow me to do probably 70% of what I need done right in Vegas. I do have an AE artist I'll send out to if it is a more complex composite. Both are great tools and compliment each other rather well. Remember to take your files out of Vegas as uncompressed though.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply, I'm really starting to see what your saying, I think your rule of 70% in vegas, 30% in AE is probably the right way for me too. Taking advantage of the better workflow in AE for big, neat compositing seems to work a bit more efficiently, while lesser compositing (70% or so) can be done extremely well in Vegas. It's great to hear back from someone who knows what they're doing; the only people I know doing this stuff are on this forum!

Cheers!

Kevin :)

Re: vegas 5 and after effects....

If using those 2 together. I would actually use minimal vegas for effects or text stuff. I use vegas for straight cutting the clips together and placing the sound where it is all needed, then use after effects to get all the composition done period. I dont think vegas is half as good at anything dealing with compositing as AE is. Specially AE 6.5! Woah...

thats my take on the subject!
