Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

speedbump

I am trying to edit some video I've recorded in 24PA mode, so I'm capturing with Vegas 4.0e. My project settings are 23.976 fps, but when I capture clips, the capture program is saying they are 29.97 fps. Fine, the wonderful 24p whitepaper says the capture program doesn't do the pulldown.

When I try to import the clips into Vegas, they stubbornly stay at 29.x fps! I don't need to get DVMaker to get these clips to be 24P, do I?

I am using a JVC DV deck, not the Panny camera to capture from, could that be an issue?

Very frustrating... I feel like I'm missing something very obvious. >:(

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Obvious question, but I must ask -- is the project you're editing in a 24P template?

And do you have "allow pulldown removal" selected?

If so, what type of JVC deck?

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

mmmm. odd as Vegas does a pretty good job at seeing the pulldown flag.. ive gone from camera to NLE to tape to Quickstream to tape again and the pulldown was always seen.

Try doing it from your camera, to rule out the deck messing with the signal first.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

There is some talk of JVC decks not "getting" the 24pA cadence, but I use one, and have no problems.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

In File|Properties, the Template is 'NTSC DV 24P Widescreen' and the framerate is '23.976 IVTC Film'.

Options|Preferences|General has 'Allow pulldown removal when opening 24P DV' checked.

The JVC deck is model HR-DVS1U, which I think is fairly old in the world of miniDV. Capture doesn't have any problem recognising it and sending commands to it over firewire. But I figured I'd have no problem, since Jarred has been able to pull 23.976 video off a Quickstream.

If I run the demo version of DVMaker against my clips, then Vegas can see them as 23.976 fps.

I've also captured with my Matrox RTX100, saving as untouched Microsoft DV, and Vegas sees the clips as 29+ fps. D'oh! However with Vegas I am definately using the 'Microsoft DV Camera and VTR' setting.

The camera operator owns his camera, I don't have a Panny, but I'll see if I can get with him and try a capture straight off the camera. Any other suggestions?

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Not completely sure but I think during capture the tape reports the frame rate at 29.97fps - is this what you are referring to or are you right clicking the captured clips in your media pool and selecting properties where it should display 23.976fps ? If its the latter and you are checking the clip properties, try reinstalling Vegas, it worked for me when I was having frame rate issues.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Ok, I reinstalled Vegas, and re-ran the 4.0e update.

Captures end up with 29.970 fps clips, from either the Media Explorer or when I bring the clip onto the timeline and examine its properties.

I suppose we could have accidentally recorded in 60i mode, but I'm pretty sure we kicked the camera over to F6, and I vaguely remember seeing 24PA on the LCD display.

I really think that my JVC deck is not passing the required metadata to Vegas. I can't get ahold of the camera for a few days, so we'll have to wait and see if it is just a question of playback device. :-/

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

I'd be surprised if you couldn't tell by watching the footage if it's 60i or 24p, most of the time. There's a marked difference in appearance.

This depends on what you shot, of course, but there really is a huge difference.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Which JVC deck is it?

Also, if you have another mini-DV camcorder, you could try capturing through it, too.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Try capturing from the camera instead.

If it works from the camera, but not from the deck, then it's the deck's fault.  There is one JVC deck that Sonic Foundry reported on, that wasn't compatible.  The exact post is at:
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=193146&Page=0

They don't identify which combo deck it was, however someone later says that the SR-VS30 (or whatever it's called) is compatible.  So I'd suspect you have the incompatible deck.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

I have successfully captured 24P from the DVX100, so the problem is indeed my JVC combo deck.

By the way, during the shoot, I spent 99.999% of the time watching a Sony 16:9 monitor, rather than the camera LCD, so I don't think I was seeing progressive output. I'm watching the LCD as I capture, and it has a distinct stutter when rapid motion is happening.

Re: Vegas 4.0e, 24P capture?

Other sites (like CreativeCow and the Sony forums) have reported the SR-VS30 working well also.  I think the problem may be with the first generation of that deck, which I think was called the SR-VS10/DVS1.  (actually I have no idea what I'm talking about, this is just what I've pieced together from a few discussions).

So, it's disappointing to hear that your deck is the problematic one, but at least now you know what's happening.

And yes, the LCD will show stuttering much more than an interlaced television will.  Remember that the recording is adding fields specifically to smooth out the display on the interlaced monitor.
