Vegas 11 due out in the fall.

I'm about to buy a new computer. How important will the GPU be? In Pro 10 they said it was only 5-20% when rendering SonyAVC. Now they say it will also help with smoother video playback and leverages the GPU for video FX, transitions, compositing, pan/crop, and track motion.

No stunning features for me, but I'll probably upgrade if there's a decent on-release discount - I'm currently only on v9.

I'm on v9 too, but the addition of GPU support for playback and effects is a feature I've been hoping for for a while. If it performs as well or better than Adobe's Mercury Playback Engine, then I think the upgrade is definitely worth it for me.

As far as I recall when V10 came out someone was kind enough to post a link for a special upgrade price of about $125 on one of the forums. If anyone knows of a similar discount link for V11 when it comes out and posts it, I'd appreciate it

I'd say very important. In the last update of Vegas 10 you could render AVC/H.264 GPU only with Cuda cores - My card is entry level so it couldn't keep up with the CPU, but the better newer cards should really help to speed up rendering.

Vegas Pro 11 supports GPU devices from AMD and NVIDIA to accelerate your workflow.

This is fantastic, AMD cards are starting to cream Nvidia in almost everything except for GPU rendering (not enough support) and they're a lot cheaper!

I really don't get this... These changes seem like something that should be pushed out via an update, not a full flown release. Maybe they have something in the pipeline that they haven't announced yet. I would love to Vegas get a nice visual upgrade!

That being said: Vegas 10 is a great product. 64bit, GPU support, stabilization plugin, multi-camera editing, so forth.. All run fairly smooth. Occasional crashes have been minimized with the latest update. I'm thrilled.

That's Sony for you!

Even before the latest update I can't remember when last Vegas bombed on me - one of the reasons I edit in it, reliability.

I started using vages 10 a couple of months back, and i really like the program as a whole, I also run final cut 7 and avid, but unlike the last persons comment I have had major crashing issues. Around once ever 2 hours of use at random it will just freeze. Iv been running it on a high spec pc with windows 7 64bit. I do run my other programs on a mac and was wandering whever it was vegas or windows that was the issue. I'll give vegas 11 a go but if things dont improve for me i'll stick with final cut and avid !

thingers crossed

It seems that many have these random crashing issues - but I've been using Vegas for about 6 years now and it's always been stable. I'm also running on a 64bit Windows 7 at the moment. Maybe you have a slight hardware/software incomparability.

I too have always found Vegas to be rock solid stable - multiple versions (since V4) on multiple Windows versions over the years. It can get pretty slow with big projects on under-resourced elderly computers, but that's my fault :)

But some other users have had exactly the same problems with FCP on Mac or Avid on Windows - compatibility does seem to be something of a lucky dip with computers...

+1

I have to agree overall, BUT, on my awesome Windows 7 core i7 workstation, Vegas crashed today when I was dragging an audio file around on the timecode. Just flat out crashed. No reason. I always send stats to Sony in hopes they will fix glitches like this, but I have definitely experienced this problem in recent months.
