Vegas 10 backup up complete projects with media... problem with re-opening on another

I need to be able to sometimes take projects with me and edit somewhere else. I have a very powerful laptop.

When done with an edit I am backing up the entire project to an external portable hard drive (clicking the include media).

But then what happens is sometimes when I go to edit on my laptop or anyther system, either the hard drive letter is different or I copy from the portable the entire directory of media and project onto the laptop.

Then I open the project and it wants me to MANUALLY click on every piece of media (since the path letter is different... this is dumb it should just look in the directory that it was opened in or or allow me to point to the path ONCE and then find all the files.. not EVERY SINGLE clip..

Sometimes I have hundreds and hundreds of clips in a project I can't sit there doing this

There must be an easier way....

Help?!?

It DOES let you point to a folder and then relink everything all at once.

Best practice is to keep everything in exactly the same relationship to each other when you back it up. Which means you should keep your .veg file on the same drive as your media and then back it all up en masse, in one step, if you transfer to an external drive. If you do, then when you open the .veg file, it should see everything without having to relink.

How? Where is this located? It kept asking me clip by clip by clip....

This is what I did back it up to one big directory with everything and the veg file in the same dir.... it had to rename some of the .mts clips because they all have the same names....

I just hit ignore and that seemed to work. then I saved the project again on the external drive with a different name

Also... I copied to an external drive.... then copied that vegas project folder to my laptop raid to work.... even though it's all in one folder is still sometimes gives me this issue... because the portable drive letter was different than the laptop raid drive....

so far clicking ignore seems to work...

When you select a clip for replacement, it should detect the other clips in the folder and ask if you want to relink them all.

You say it's renaming clips because they have duplicate names? How is that possible? If they have duplicate names, then they must be residing in different folders, right? In which case the complete folder structure needs to be maintained on the copy.

All I do is copy the entire folder to the external drive, using Windows Explorer. When I attach that drive to a different computer, it asks me once for the new folder, and that's all.

The other thing you can do is use Windows Disk Management to change the drive letter of the external drive to whatever Vegas is expecting it to be.

Yeah, I suspect forcibly changing the drive letter of the external drive to something like Z: (so that it's consistent, whichever computer you're using) will make these problems go away...
