I'm struggling to find a concrete description between the VCT-14 and VCT-U14 QR plates from Sony. Can someone enlighten me?

I think the U14 has the solid molded top, and doesn't require the bolted on "hook and plate" at the back.

I think capt nails it. Buy a Sony or Zacuto. There are a lot of no name VCT plates out there and most of them suck and have a sloppy fit. I have the Zacuto VCT Pro base and the Zacuto VCT14 plate and they fit together perfectly. I tried a few no name ones before buying mine and they were junk. You get what you pay for in this case.

The VCT-14 is the heavier duty, higher-end, "broadcast" plate. The "U" version is the less expensive, more plastic-y, "professional" or "universal" plate. Also, the rear 'tie-down' doesn't move/adjust on the U. The U's were the plates that shipped with the Professional and Universal(non-Broadcast/BVW) series cameras back in the day. My first Betacam, a UVW-100B(Universal series), shipped with the "U" and so did my D50WS(Professional series). That being said, I still have the U plates along with three broadcast plates(they are the day-to-day plates) and they all still work. The oldest being over 21 years old, now.

If you buy a Sony, only buy the VCT 14 plate....it's their pro version of the plate...this is no area to skimp on if you think of equipment cost sitting on top of your tripod, both in putting a heavy camera up their and the system locking in properly and the camera staying up there once locked in!
