Varizoom-like throttle style focus?

I remember using a throttle style focus on a tripod mounted JVC GY500 maybe? I thought it was sooo sweet at the time. I've recently been thinking about it again, since I got my own HD100. Has anybody tried to make their own? I'm thinking the throttle assembly from a motorcycle might work.

Any idea what I might use for keywords? Whenever I try using these forum searches, they either really don't like my search phrase, or they return a million pages that have almost nothing to do with what I'm looking for. And thanks for the response

does the HD100 use LANC? im sure you can find the protocol for lanc somewhere, but this is for the dvx-100. if it's similar you could use anything to turn the pot, maybe an old computer joystick if yer a big nerd...
