Varizoom LED Light

hmm this looks nice, i'm also looking for an onboard light for promotional videos at clubs and such. I really like the fact that you can use Panny batteries with it....

anyone have any experience with this?

the vidled is also a great lite and by mid nov. they will have a model where you can use panny batts if you can wait that long.

any word on the updated pricing for the vidled? I know theres a rep on these boards somewhere... :)

i've heard good things about the vidled but i might need it before mid-nov.

I've got a Varizoom in shipment to me from B&H (slightly better price than the site you found as well) because I couldn't wait until November for the VidLed. I'll be using it this weekend. I'll try to remember to give a report on my impressions next week.

no i dont know the price of the new vidled but there is a rep from there on here maybe he can tell us but he did say mid nov. id love to hear the results of your varizoom lite.

I'll be using it for an outdoor wedding reception after the sun goes down. Of course a 40W light won't throw far and illuminate a crowd, but it should allow me to light people within on-camera mic distance, which is all I'm looking to do.

The following week I'll be using it at a SF convention for doing things like interviews with participants of the costume competition if the backstage and ballroom lighting is too dim. What room lighting I'll have at the con is a total unknown, so I bought this to be prepared.

I like the built-in barn doors as well as the built-in diffuser and color correction panels.

It should be here on Wednesday -- enough time for me to try it before I need to use it.

Hey.
Just to clarify: there is no new VIDLED coming in November; the VIDLED lights are still the same [great lights] as they were. The only thing we're modifying is the DVX/HVX battery adapter. Although we currently sell one of these adapters that allows the use of the DVX battery (such as the DVXuser battery, or the Spec-Comm one), it is currently NOT possible to attach it to the VIDLED light, except with Velcro® or some such.
We have now re-designed this adapter plate so it can be BOLTED to the Vidled LED light.
So in summary: the VIDLED lights are unchanged; the NEW DVX/HVX adapter plate can be mounted to the VIDLED light using 1/4" bolts. The new DVX/HVX adapter plates will be available starting in mid-November.

thanks for the clarification on the vidled, good to know i can order one if need be. I'm curious as to how your impressions of the varizoom light turn out, please let us know when you've receieved it and played around with it. I also like the barndoors/diffuser and am curious how well it all works.

My Varizoom LED will be here tomorrow and I can't wait. I also ordered mine from B&H. I'll let you know how it works out.

I picked up one of these from B&H, too. It was between this and the VidLED system and he's still waiting on the Panny adapters in early November.

I haven't a clue as to how well Lite Panels work compared to anything. I do know that they are much more expensive than either VidLed or the Varizoom LED light. So much so that they I didn't bother to research them further.

For now, this is just an expensive hobby for me. Despite that, I've got 4.5 days of shooting scheduled over the next 2 weeks. My head is hurting when I think of all the editing time I'll be facing!

please post up asap on the quality of it, how well it spreads light in fill or as a spot with closed barn doors.
I need one before october 28 and i need a confirmation on its quality!

My Varizoom light arrived yesterday, however I didn't have much time to work with it last night. I did step outside briefly (well after dark) and found that the diffuser panel works very well and is rather necessary unless you are deliberately trying for a spot effect; without it there is a significant hotspot.

As expected, the color correction panel cuts down the light but I didn't have time to determine how many stops. It does seem to do a good job of hitting 3200K however.

Without color correction the light seems to be close to but not quite 5600K. Assuming my DVX100a is correct, using the white balance preset left a very slight bluish cast to the shot. Of course, you should always manual white balance, right?

Using the diffuser the light output was acceptable to approximately 10' using only 6dB of gain. It seemed to fill the entire field of view with the camera zoomed all the way out.

Without the diffuser the hotspot was quite tight. However I ran out of time to test how far I could use it as a spot.

The build quality seems to be adequate, but only time will tell. It comes in a very nice balistic nylon case to pad it and the Pannie battery adaptor.

All tests were performed with the variable light ouput turned all the way up. I do like having a variable light control knob, so that you can avoid blinding your subjects if you still have some latitude with the camera.

Sorry, no footage to post. I'm pressed for time over the next couple of weeks, so hopefully someone else buying one can post footage.

I received my Varizoom LED light yesterday also and the only thing i have done with it so far is test how long it will last with the dimmer turned up to full strength on a panasonic 5400 Mah battery. I was very please that it lasted just over 3 hours at full power on a fully charged battery. After about 3 hours and 10 minutes it started to make a high pitched noise for about 5 minutes before it died out, when it did die out it went off instantly. 3 hours on one batter at full power is great if you ask me and I'm sure my DVXuser 5600's would last even a little longer.

thanks for the initial reviews people. I'd love to see some footage though thats asking a lot, even a still or two (comparison?) would be awesome.

Glad to hear it'll last 3 hours or so, that definitly a respectable time off one battery. be sure to let us know what its like with a little more hands on experience.

thanks again.

Im glad you guys are pleased with your lite. i was wondering is hard to deal with the placement of the battery on the handle it just seems from pics ive seen you lose a lot of handle space or can it be put somewhere else?
