VARIZOOM focus wheel upgrade

Done a bunch of research on this site on the remote focus units, specifically foxi bebob and varizoom. The big knock on the Varizoom seems to be the size of the focus wheel. I haven't seen much on how effective the upgrade has been. Does this put the Varizoom on par with the foxi for follow focus?

I have the Varizoom with the large focus wheel upgrade. It definitely helps, but one thing that's missing is a clear mark on the Varizoom controller housing that you can use to line up marks on the white band of the wheel -- you'll have to fix that yourself. An even larger wheel with more visible focus marks would be nice, but in terms of raw control and repeatability, it's worth the money as it is.

I marked a spot on the controller body with a small but bright red paint dot.

A tab or something that extends over the side of the body and right next to the white markable section of the focus wheel would be better.

I broke my Varizoom puting on the larger focus wheel as the instructions said. Be very careful. Because of the flimsy construction of the focus pot, I am moving on to another brand so be careful.

is the focus wheel upgrade worth the trouble? or worth possibly breaking the varizoom? has anyone successfully easily switched to the new wheel?

I'm not disputing that Don broke his, but that has got to be the exception.

The procedure is really very simple -- you loosen and remove a set screw using the supplied wrench, pull the original focus knob off, slide the new one on, insert the set screw, and tighten it. Done.

That took me all of one minute, and nothing broke.

I have the Bebob Foxi, and it is expensive... but I do not know how I got along without it. I bought it from BH and I have not regretted it. It has a nice, robust feel about it, and it is easy to mark. I definitely got what I paid for.

I like it, but mine is on a DVRigPro, so I'm not looking at it as much as other people to have to mark things. The big wheel is just nice when you need to adjust focus at any given time. It's just easier to work with than the small wheel. But I like the small wheel for iris control. Never had any problem when putting it on, and I have taken it off a few times just to make sure I could put the small wheel back on. But I never have had a reason to go back to the small wheel.
