Variable speed changes

I want a clip to start really fast and slow down. I've been experimenting with the variable setting on the time remap menu in final cut, but I'm having no luck. Can anyone point out where I'm wrong??

i hate the variable motion in fcp... what u slow down in one area it speeds up in the next to make up for it... i find that really annoying... i always use after effects for variable slo motion.

like say you want your clip to play at 100percent then at say between the 3 and 5 second marker you want it to transition to slow down and play at 50percent then back to 100percent by the 5th second and continue the clip.. from what i've tried this is impossible in fcp
