variable frame rates for slow motion

if i'm shooting in 60i at 1/120th shutter speed to slow down to 40% (as instructed in the dvx book) should i edit this on a 23.98 timeline?

same question for 30p at 80%, should this go on a 23.98 timeline as well?

i don't know if i did something wrong on the capture settings or what, but the 60i looks very choppy and unusable on the 24 frame timeline, and the 30P won't even play.

FCP will autoconvert to the same timebase. If it took 1 second at 60i it will take 1 second in 2fps time line.
