Hey again, was wondewring if anyone ever worked with particular in this scenario? Look at the video clip, im tring to replicate the burst of smoke that forms before the women appears, would it even be possible in after effects?

hope you guys have some ideas, Thanks. Dave.

Well, I think it would be. I haven't tried anything just like that, but I'm sure you could make particles with particular and color them with colorama, black where it's densest and blue for the rest. I might have to try it but I'm pretty sure it can be done.

Definately doable. Make your particle a Cloudlet and find a good ration between particle size/feather/opacity. Then you would want an initial burst taht could be keyframed throught the emiiter settings, followed by adding a turbelence field.

Another option is to combine a number of seperate particle simulations to get a more complex movement.

Obviously in the end, you would also use the particles as a track matte to dissolve your layer (if thats what you're after)

Good luck

i did the same exact effect on text a little while back for a title for someone elses dvxuser short that isnt released yet, only the smoke just rises. what i did was make a plate with the smoke containing the movement that I wanted after the subject turns to smoke (your particles swirling or whatever you want your smoke to look like), and then make a plate with the subject you want to turn to smoke. I duplicated the smoke layer and enlarged it a little and then did an autotrace to create a moving mask of the subject layer and copied the mask(s) to the duplicated ..and larger AND the normal smoke layer. then when i wanted the transform to take place i did a simultaneous dissolve/blur and fade of the subject layer and cross dissolved/faded it with the enlarged smoke layer which i also slightly blurred as it came in to make everything sort of blend together nicely. the larger smoke layer then looses its blur during the transition/transform/ and is faded out almost as quickly as it was faded in, and i dissolved the slightly larger smoke into the normal smoke layer (which i used the masks to start from the tight subject constraints, and expnad to the full smoke visible in the clip) while using an effect to distort the larger smoke layer into whisps which flowed into the movement of the normal smoke layer as it faded out to finish the transform and let the normal smoke layer do the rest from there. what this does is create a transformation to smoke which is distinctly in the outline of your subject and makes it look like the subject just dissolves into the smoke in a fluid like motion. featherng edges of the masks is important, and timing the transitions is as well, but it looks really good when its done. for what its worth, i used actuall "smoke" which in reality I used steam for since its easier to deal with, and sticks together more.
