i had no idea this movie was a remake of a spanish movie.
its copied shot for shot and line for line. and even has Penélope Cruz in the exact role. the movie doesnt look that old too. strange to me :-/
It is kind of odd. But a lot of new movies have been made overseas first and then remade for the US market. The Ring, The Grudge, etc. I think we Americans think we can do things better. Or we don't like to read subtitles. ;D
odd is right.
i speak spanish so it was ok for mewhat i found strange was i heard nothing of the original. with the ring and the grudge i knew they were remakes.
Oh well :-/

To me the original is a kick ass movie, but the exact same movie by Cameron Crowe starring Tom Cruise... wasn't very good. Reason? I don't know. It just wasn't very good. Possibly Crowe was out of his genre? They also pimped that movie huge sending Cruise Cruz and Crowe worldwide trying to promote it. They would have done better just buying the original and re-releasing it. (gonna have to see The Sea Inside, cuz Amenabar is one hell of a director - love The Others)
"Open Your Eyes(Abre los Ojos)" is 34.8 times better film.
Don't waste your time on Vanilla Sky,
also you get to see Penelope Cruz topless in Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)

agreed.
I agree too.
I recommend the last 15 minutes of "abre los ojos".
A real philip K dick experience. it could be a part of the forthcoming (?) ubik movie.
The most interesting imho in vanilla sky is the fact that tom cruise and some others megastars are always looking for talented directors everywhere in the world.
ps :
True lies is a remake from a french movie but the only involvement of arnold makes the film totally different !
Vanilla Sky is one of my favorites all time. Thought it was terrific. Loved the acting from everybody also. Plus, you get to see Penelope Cruz topless in vanilla sky as well.
This a new tendency, but a strong one : re-making "a la US" recent non-american films.
Americans are opened on the outside world, as long as the outside world gets americanized, sterilized, pakaged and flavoured with all the indispensable ingredients of the American way of Life (for whatever it is...)
At least, this is what the Lords of the World think.
The American audience would not understand. That's how Hollywood justify their massive re-making campaign.
The Lords of the World probably think the american audience is too lazy to see foreign movies — or too dumb — or too self-oriented.
Are they right ? Are they wrong ?
P.S. : Funny detail : The Others, Amenabar's last movie (very brilliant neo-hitchcockian stifling movie) was produced by Tom Cruise's company, with leading actress Nicole Kidman and was shot at the same moment Cruise produced Vanilla Sky out of Amenabar's Obre Los Ojos, divorced with Nicole and got laid with Penelope.
Making a movie is still a gamble. Look Alexander...
So, when a foreign movie hits the native box office, there are some probabilities that the remake will work in Usa.
We are living in globalized world and the taste of western "normal" people is generally the same and build on the same sub-culture.
Is it know that an hollywood movie start to earn money with foreign audiencies. The Us market is used to cover the cost.
It's not cinema, now it's accounting.
May be it's why we are tasting more and more asian movies, here in france.

They're making Ubik? Damn. I wanted to.
Guess I'll have settle for A Maze Of Death.
(Not so interesting side-note: the first film I wrote was based on one of Phil's short stories... Maybe someday I'll buy the rights and shoot it.)
There is also this: most Americans haven't see the original and probably won't...ever. So unless someone is planning on kidnapping them and sitting them down in a theater that shows Spanish films...no harm, no foul.
On the other hand, maybe seeing the US version will prompt some to see the original.
