vacuuming sound to flashback they use on lost

how do they create that sound that sort of sucks in all the ambient noise and then quickly turns to QUIET that they do on Lost. I'm not looking for that specific sound, but would like to know the process for creating that effect. Thanks.

Never heard it but I would do it by taking all the sounds and making them reverb/drown out as you apply a woosh sound affect (with lots of bass/subwoofer LFE) and abruptly cut it off will a slight echo into a light tone sound like when you lose your hearing temporarily. If you pitch shift a airplane/jet passing over, you can create your own woosh sound.
