V/O mic

I'm considering purchasing a mic specifically for VO work. I have a 416 and while I like it I'm hopeful a different pickup pattern will give me a little variety in the sound quality of my work. I feed my mics into a Mix Pre-D.

I'm looking for something in the $150-$300 range and definitely open to buying something used. I'm open to ribbon or condenser, whatever people think is a good option for VO. Am I silly for using a $150-$300 mic over the senhiesser MKH 416? I'd also want something that looks cool if possible...don't judge me =)

Here are some used options that i've come across but please feel free to suggest something else:

Bluebird mic - $190
Sterling ST79 - $180
Audio Technica Pro Studio Microphone - $200
Reslosound RBT/L - $250
AKG Pro Audio C214 - $300

Also what should I be looking for when buying a used mic?

I do VO work nationally and the majority of my clients on the west coast like my 416/Avalon 737 combo, and the majority of my clients on the east coast like my U87/Jensen twin servo combo. Go figure!

hmmm. I'm a little hesitant about dynamic mics because of the preamp needs and also they all sound a little too warm/radio host type sound. Do you think the Mix Pre-D is too weak for a dynamic?

No way I could afford an Avalon or Jensen...and I'm on the east coast anyaway ;)

What would you guys go with between the Sterling ST79 and the AKG C214. Something to fill the gaps of the 416 and mostly for female voices. Thanks!

I did the visuals for a large credit-union training project last year where we had to record eight VO artists, and I was surprised to see that the studio was using a low cost Audio-Technica mic in the sound-booth. ( I am pretty sure it was an AT4040 mic ) We were recording both male/female teens and adults, and it all sounded good in the final piece.
