UV filter cleaning problem?

Hi,
I had a tough smudge on my UV filter and I had to rub it pretty well with lens cleaner and lens tissue to get it off. I cleaned the whole lens and when I was done I noticed a blue shade on the tissue. I'm wondering if I took of an important coating on the filter. I don't usually see this blue-ish color and I believe lens cleaner is completely clear.
Could I have damaged the filter?

You probably did damage the filter -- it should be obvious when you look at light reflecting off the filter.

At least you didn't damage the front lens element, this is why everyone should have a UV filter.

Right. That is why I ALWAYS keep it on there. For example, I have no idea how the smudge got on the filter in the first place and thank goodness it didn't get on the lens.
thanks for the response. I'll try and see if I can see a flaw in the filter.
